Well if finally happened. Early last year my starter button failed and engaged my starter while I was on congested outer belt unable to pull over as quickly as I wanted. Well I disconnected the wire to the starter and rode home. I replaced the button and finished out the year. Of course from that day on I heard a bad grinding noise every time I started my bike. Last night it finally failed completely. This morning I took the primary apart to find a missing tooth on my jack shaft gear and all the teeth on my clutch basket worn and chewed up. Well I really do not want to but a new clutch basket and want to see what replacement gear sets you all recommend. I am stock so was planning on staying with the stock ratio.  I see BKrider on E-bay has the basket gear for around $50.  Has anyone bought and used this gear? Should I stay away from this low cost gear?

Open to all suggestions.

Also what should I use to clean all the metal shavings from my stator and rotor that will not damage either or loosen the magnets.

Thanks

Use Brake Clean to flush out the primary... Pull the rotor off to clean out all the grindings, you need the ring gear (on clutch basket) and the pinion gear (on jackshaft) BK'S parts are ok... Make sure you have between .080 and .125 clearance on the pinion to ring gear...

Also the tapered side of the ring gear faces out towards you (not towards the motor)... Any questions just ask...

Some time ago I trashed the jackshaft & starter ring gear the same way with a junk Compu-fire starter. Long story short, I got a replacement ring gear & jackshaft from the great folks at Evolution Industires for a fraction of the price that a complete clutch basket would have cost. Install is pretty straight forward that I was able to do myself. Drill out the old rivet and bolt on new ring gear. Its been in there for at least 40K miles now without a worry.

I went with the original amount of teeth.

Will a stock starter turn over a switch to a 66 ring gear with a 9 pinion?

Yes. I did it on my '98, and it was fine.
