Hello all.  Gotta dumb question.  Does anyone know which direction the Cometic crankcase seal is supposed to face when installing?  Can't find info anywhere and I'm getting mixed answers from people.  It's double lipped so it shouldn't leak anyway but I just want to install it correctly.  Thanks in advance for any replies.

Thanks man!  Funny I was told by four Harley techs to do it the other way..

Well, I`m a licensed aircraft tech, and I install it the other way, spring toward the engine.

But the service manual does not agree with me on that...

Works fine...

Double lip seals technically do not seal both ways. Open end, garter spring should be toward the oil you are trying to hold in. The other lip of the seal is more of a wiper to keep debri away from the sealing lip. Having the open end, garter spring toward the oil and pressure pulses aids dynamically to lip sealing effect. Don't believe me, install then backwards on a front end. The lip won't hold back the pressure when you hit a bump. Sealing will only be static, not dynamic.
