First a rant. That damned POS digital temp/level oil dipstick for touring models just don't last long without breaking. I've heard many people have problems with these.

Anyway, does anyone know if there is a good old analog temp oil dipstick for FLH touring models, similar to what is available for Softails? If not, can anyone think of a reason why this couldn't be developed? The only thing I see that may be an issue is the need for the probe portion to swivel, unlike the Softail's which is straight...

No anolog that I know of, because you need a dipstick with a hinge. Those digital dipsticks and the LED fuel caps are the biggest pos HD sells.

Howdy Jeff.  I've never seen an analog probe.  If it is just a piece of metal that conducts heat how about cutting the probe and brazing in a heavy duty fishing line swivel in between the two pieces?  Or a length of flexible stainless steel mesh?  I am set up for brazing if you want to give it a try.

I am on my 2nd.  Temp guage is very accurate but I experienced the same problem with both; they won't  show the oil level.  The temp guage is very accurate but the first one never would show the level; always seeking as if level was too high or too low; hot or cold. The 2nd unit, showed the oil level for a couple of days and now it does the same thing; seeking, showing level as too high or low.  Dealer replaced the first one as warranty but it took about a week.

I had issues with my lcd dipstick. It read 40-50deg hotter than what the actual oil temp was. I found this out while getting my bike tuned. The tuner was showing me the oil temp with his laser gun, and it was reading abot 220-230, and the lcd dipstick was reading 265-275. The dealer said they have seen a few of these malfunction.

I use the HD digital temp/level oil stick and have not had any problems with it.  I understand that the problems are due to removing them from the oil hole improperly.  there is a technique that is required to properly remove the stick so damage doesn't occur. I find the gauge to be very accurate in both temp and level.   Maybe I'm just lucky with my purchase.

I have had the same digital temp dipstick since 04 and it works fine....

No kidding, what a waste of money.

I was taught to always check the calibration of a thermometer in an ice bath and boiling water before using it.

Now there is a great idea - checking the calibration in an ice bath and boiling water. I might just reconsider buying one now that I can check its accuracy.

Water boils at 212 deg, I checked mine in a pot of boiling water, and it said 252 deg, and then it flashed no sensor. I think Ill just get my own laser temp gun, so I can shoot it in the oil tank for an accurate reading.

I've had one over a year now and no problems.  Temp is right compared to my temp gun.  Level is accurate according to my previous dipstick.

Only problem I've got with mine is the display has some engine oil in it that I can't seem to get out. I think it happened when I had my little misshap last year. I've had the thing torn apart down to the display but can't get the oil out. Other than that it works fine!

While your discussin the digital gage, a serious question, not trying to stir the pot. Friend of mine has one.Reads temp fine, level is another matter. He said it read the level with dino in it but not with the SYn3 the dealer put in during a service. Switched back to dino anf said it now reads. A crock??? Hey, just askin so don't turn this into an oil thread, ok. Has anyone heard of this problem with the digital gages? Doesn't make sense to me at all.

I've had the original temp dipstick for 7 years and almost 100,000 miles and it still works fine. But I don't check it every 5 min. either.

Just get rid of that POS and put a oil temp. guage in your fairing in place of the air temp.

No one has mentioned that a little moisture, and i'm speaking little have fogged the LCD on two of my units. Talked to local dealer...but no intelligble response. HD must think we just ride in the sun shine.

I'm still of the opinion that if it were possible (not sure) to do an analog temp gauge, whoever came up with it could probably sell quite a few.

I really don't want to do a dash mounted one when the Deuce sitting on the other side of the garage has a nice analog gauge and works just fine. Why not for a bagger? Somehow it has to be possible to put the damned sensor on a swivel.
