want to hard wire Garmin GPS

Anyone offer a Garmin GPS cable that can be hardwired? Trying out my Garmin nuvi 2555w GPS and would like to hard wire it to under the fairing (FLHTC) and grab power from the cigarette lighter. Don't find any kits just the one like I already have with the plug for the cigarette socket.

I just add a cigarette lighter plug inside the fairing, plug in the power cable and tape it up well. Run the wire out to the handle bars or wherever you mount the GPS and Bob's your uncle! Done it this way on three different baggers. Never had an issue.

Sorry but IMO, there are lots better ways to do this than use a bulky cig lighter plug and duck tape.

Sorry, maybe you like duct tape, but I used 3M Super 33.

Perhaps there are other ways, but I used what I had, did not have to order anything, plus it is buried under the fairing so nobody sees it any way. I have ran this set up for close to 100,000 miles with zero issues.

Back in 2006 when I did it the first time I searched for a cable, or some other method and did not find anything, I realize you can buy cables and power supplies to do it now, but it works so I just run it.

It has the mini (micro?) usb that goes in the back of the GPS.

Some have the micro USB, some have the mini USB.

I use these for permanently hard wiring in devices with a micro USB.

I run a USB to micro USB cable with a lighter socket adaptor when I use it in my pickup, works fine.

I recently bought a Garmin Zumo with lifetime maps (marketing) that is a refurbished unit, basicaly an open box return.
Anyways, it came with the Ram mounts two power sources .
One for the car scution cup and ciggie lighter thing.
The other is the hard wire with lots of power cable to run and prolly reach the battery after running it through where the clutch cable goes into fairing and then run it out the bottom of fairing and under fuel tank to the battery...after crimping or soldering some ring connectors to it.
I havnt figured out what way I am going to head cause I have a full tank of fuel and dont have a lift to aide with keeping the bike upright.
I am not in favour of always working on the bike on the side stand as my neck gets sore when looking at the bike cocked trying to visualize it being square and all.

Thanks Ultra. I have that plug now, was looking to either hard wire it (with the one you posted the link for or the one Coyote uses) but an easier way would be to use a cable that would plug a usb plug into a usb cigarette lighter adapter (like for a cell phone).

I don't think I can use the one in the link I posted as it appears by looking at my cord that my 2555LM uses a micro usb not a mini even though the add says it will work with the 2555LM.

** Went out and checked my GPS. It's a Nuvi 2555LM. The slot for power in the GPS has a plastic block with several small holes. The Garmin plug appears to be hollow, No pins showing so I "assume" it's a micro usb?

The people that make battery tenders make a connector that uses the two prong connector on one end and a usb on the other. This can be connected to the auxiliary plug on newer harleys that the battery tended connects to. Depending upon your model you can buy an extension cord and cut off the female version of this plug and hard wire it to a 12v connection on the front of the bike (auxiliary lights for example). This connector has a module that automatically provides the right current for devices (phones, players, gps'). Then you use a standard usb cable to connect any device to it. (You can buy short ones).

If you are under the fairing, the connector with the RED plastic cover over it is a power connection that is not used on bikes sold in the USA.  This is for a light required in Europe.  This power is switched by the ignition switch and is a good place to pick-up your GPS power.  IMO

Thanks for the replies. I wound up going with a USB plug that I plug into a USB cigarette lighter plug (similar to the one in the link in my post #12). Got a 24" cord from GPS City and works fine. I can see the garmin 2555LM no problem. Might update some day to a Zumo but just seeing if I will use this now. So far I like it.

have the 2455 lmt on my flhtci and i used a kuryakyn clutch perch mount kit in chrome to mount the gps and a ram cradle to hold the gps. just using the stock power cable plugged into the cigarette lighter but i as well have thought of hard wiring it some where.

Wound up using a USB cord from GPS city and RAM mount in mirror hole on clutch perch. Works great.

klammer!......... easiest way for me was to by a battery tender cigarette lighter socket and zip tie it on top of the radio under the fairing. ran the garmin 2455 plug out the left lower rubber where the handle bar comes thru and cut the tender end off and shortened the cable some and then used a piggy back spade connector to plug the cigarette lighter wires to and used the extra prong on each spade to plug the battery tender socket into. garmin plugins for the 2455 convert 12 volts to 5 volts so i couldnt just cut the end of the garmin power cord off and hard wire it. in essence i now have two cigarette sockets. the stock one and the one zip tied to the big harness on top and near the radio.  if i ever upgrade gps models and they power up by cigarette socket it's easy to redo for the next model if existing plug in doesn't fit.

Thanks. I just plugged a usb plug into the fairing lighter socket and used a usb cable. Works great.

had my power cord plugged into the cigarette socket on the outside as well however i used a second socket and mounted it above the radio inside the fairing. now all the connections and extra cable are hidden except for the cable going to and the connection at the gps.

I have a Zumo 550 GPS unit.

It's hard wired to an extra plug, IIRC that's connected to the lights or ciggarate lighter. It turns on when the fork key lock is turned on.
