Title: Best specialty tool for rear rocker box cover?
Post by: les on December 29, 2018, 06:52:12 AM
Are there any specialty tools for getting to the two rear rocker box cover bolts?  I'm looking for something that makes it as easy as possible.  What's the best tool out there (not necessarily the cheapest)?

Yes, it's advertised as a wrench for the twin cam.  Have you actually used this on the M8?

Did you look at the Lang Tools 6530? It doesn't look any smaller. :idunno:

Careful with a ratchet and socket... you can get it stuck with no way to reverse it.

Of course I looked at the Lang 6530 before my original posting.  However, it says for EVO and Twin Cam.  Now I know that does not necessarily mean it won't work on the M8 (of which I did a 117" a few weeks ago).  But before I go buy the Lang 6530, I'd like to get some advice from someone who has worked on an M8, and found the best and easiest to use tool.

Most importantly, someone who's actually used the tool with his own hands on the M8.

the Lang tool looks like it would be helpful for Twin Cam.  I think Les is looking for a specialty tool for getting rear rocker box bolts on an M8.  in fact i'm sure he is since he and I just did mine and bitched about it the whole time we worked on it.  has anyone used the lang tool on an M8? if so does it work better than small wrenches?

I use the lang tool and it works great for me. My coworker uses the snap on flank drive low profile socket with a ratcheting wrench and says it works great too. The snap on set part number is 110RT. You could just buy the 7/16 socket from that set as well.

I realize that this is a M* thread but I just put Rocker Lockers on my Twin Cam. I used a box end wrench to break the bolts loose. Then I used a Gear Wrench to run them out to the point where I could get the Gear Wrench out and finished with an open end wrench. No problem. As an aside I felt that a lot of the fasteners holding the rocker plates and even the rocker covers were not consistent in the amount of torque required to break them loose.

Also the lang tool has the ratcheting direction lever on the side , so if you get in a jam you can switch it back without being stuck under the frame like a regular ratchet.

The Lang is the same as the SE version, just a different color sleeve.
From left to right- Snap-on 1/4" ratchet with Matco stubby 3/16 allen socket, SE lower rocker box wrench, SE intake manifold wrench, and SE rocker box bolt ratcheting wrench ( same as the Lang 6530, also available as a KStar piece)

LOL  Happened to me on my TC88   ratcheting box wrench.. non reversible type..  Ended up removing the front engine mount and stabilizer links to get the damn thing out.. That will never happen again..lessons learned.

I just took an older small boxed end wrench and bent it the way I needed it to make it easy to use. I thought it might be slow and tedious but actually because of the recessed area on the rocker box, it was as fast as a ratchet wrench. If any of these others that have been mentioned are quicker, I would be open for sure.
