Title: Panhead head insert bolt
Post by: Nick9900 on December 04, 2022, 06:03:37 AM
Is it possible or safe to attempt to counter sync the insert? I have one on a head I had re done for valve seats. Noticed the insert being slightly raised. Have concerns the head won't seal due to that.

If I understand correctly, a head bolt threaded insert is proud of the headface.

I had the same issue with my Shovel project having multiple proud inserts. I fixed it using a counterbore endmill in cordless drill as pictured. Also a threaded adaptor to centralize it.
Hopefully picture is a 1000 words...

Done 150 miles so far...

Hope this helps. Good luck.

The machinist I used for years (he passed 2 years ago) told me not to counter sink the inserts on a panhead.  He said he would do this for a shovel, but not a pan.  He always returned my heads to me after grinding the surface (and insert) flat.

You'll just pull the insert down again with the poor QC sand cast heads the Pan Heads are.

Ideally it should be machined but you can easily do it with a flat mill file. Countersinking won't do this for you.
