Yes they are 3 phase. Don't think 50amp as they have a 40 amp fuse.

A charging system diagnosis will tell you what's going on.
How many volts does the standing battery have?
How many volts going to battery while running?
How many volts while running with the stereo on?
Does he do a lot of short trips?
Does he run the stereo at higher volume often while riding, especially at low speeds for extended time?
Does he run with his spotlights on all the time?
How old is the battery?
Have you checked for loose battery connections?

if a 50a alt/reg goes straight to the battery how does that effect the 40a fuse?

The bike isn't wired that way.  I very much doubt you need more capacity.

Follow Hoss' lead and do the leg work to see where the trouble is prevalent.

As coyote states, "doubtful he needs more capacity", assuming no energy-draining mods. You didn't mention it but has the owner invested some money on audio recently? Sounds (no pun intended) like he might have, assuming the 40A charging system, driving habits and battery check-out okay.

Keep us updated when you can.

I miss the simplicity of those days.

Thanks
