Title: All Balls primary bearing
Post by: 1340evo on September 16, 2021, 12:33:31 PM
All Balls sealed bearing kit, can you put them in a normal primary or are open ones better?

All Balls is GREAT stuff.
If you are running open there are other tricks you can do , *ceramic is much better .
If you use a regular bearing you can get a heavy-duty one,  pry the seal up and off and make sure it is greased well .
*Micro Blue sells a bearing about a thou too tight, it hones out EZ enough.
Somewhere I have a thread going on out here, or PM me

you're better off installing a S&S Inner Primary Mainshaft Bearing Race

Don't mess around with sealed ball bearings, or any ball bearing, sealed or unsealed, or modified 6205 bearing, in your inner primary. It will eventually BITE you . Non-slip race (Mid USA M/C parts)or( S&S ), and a stock MoCo inner primary bearing, and you'll be good to go. Prolly last a lifetime.

AllBalls do a std unit like the MoCo one, maybe that will do the job? I agree you need rollers or you have balls at both ends. What happens when the shaft expands, it starts to pre-load the bearings. either you need the type that don't press on the shaft, or roller type... PN is ALLBALLS 25-3101

Just re-looking at whats been done to mine with a few spares I have in a box.
It look like the outer race is a AB roller unit, but the inner race is the MoCo original. Measuring them up, the MoCO inner is .01mm bigger than the inner that came with the AB unit!
I'd assume you can't mix and match but as you say above.. you can buy now inners from S&S etc?
How does that work

what are you measuring with ?

.01mm = 4 tenths of a thou = nothing

Micrometer... I'm not sure. Bearings are graded for expansion etc.. There is a slight browning of the surface so thinking it might be heat??

Perhaps I don't understand?
I do not understand how a bushing will work in an oil-less situation?

I don't understand your question, ie. bushing ?

Thumper, the OP is using a stock primary (not open) and as you know, it is lip sealed to the outside and the bushing on the trans shaft. The OEM style roller bearing is fed from the inside primary oil storm.  What John Sachs is pointing out is that the OEM roller bearing is very robust with more bearing surface contact than a ball brg. and tends to outlive a ball bearing of the 6205 size.  The S&S replacement race has a non slip feature not found in the OEM race and most of us change that from OEM to S&S at the first opportunity to prevent future troubles caused by it travelling inward on the shaft.

Nothing in the Uk for the inner bearing so guess I need to order from the US.. that the Hog off the road for this year then.
How does the S&S Inner Primary Mainshaft Bearing Race work... how does it stay in place. I cheated with my std one and put bearing fit on it last time, didn't move at all but did take a bit to get it off...

The S&S sleeve has a lip on the inside / outboard rim that causes a severe interference fit that locks it solidly in place when seated.  It's an excellent option that never moves even under big power.  You get to keep the roller with superior contact width.

Is there a closed roller bearing available for open primaries?

Im in here again, my new tyre is 150 wide but measure 168! (old one measured 156 ish) so bigger offset sprocket required! also the small seal was a tad lose so I've removed the inner race again to address that!

But going back to the S&S inner race. In the fitting instructions it says :-

FITMENT
S&S Inner Primary Bearing Race PN 560-0241 fits big twin models with
stock 6 speed Cruise Drive™ transmissions found in all 2008-up models.
560-0241 has been verified to fit OEM main shaft PN's:
35467-08
35467-06B
These main shafts measure approximately .9765" in diameter. This
race does not fit OEM main shaft PN 35467-06 which measures
approximately .9850" in diameter. It also does not fit Baker™ 7 speed
main shafts.

My bike is a 1989 tapered shaft upgraded to the 1990 splined shaft. The shaft measures .9850 so am I right in saying it does not fit this shaft? but don't see any other bearing specifying this?

Yes, sorry, you are correct... I've picked up the wrong data sheet there.. can't find one for 56-5089?

It does say these fit 91 to 06, so not sure it will fit me 89 / 90 shaft??

So I've answered a few questions today. I ordered ANOTHER S&S inner race as above. Last time I tried this it didn't work out right and I could not get it on far enough.
well, this one has gone on and is spot on for position so obviously the first one is made wrong
So that will be going back.....
For the roller bearing, it's a AllBalls part but I'm reading some bad things about the brand. I may go MoCo or do you use another make at all... think the part number is 9135 but when I look on the HD site, it says made in Mexico??... also seen INA FC67571.1 named but can't find the bearing in the UK?
