Title: CKP sensor lifespan
Post by: fleetmechanic on June 16, 2022, 11:04:48 AM
We have a 2012 FLHP with about 20K miles on it that went out yesterday and now today he came back saying it was cutting out badly.   Only code showing is PO374 about the CKP sensor.  TMAP wiring looks good, CKP wiring looks OK
so I'm hoping it's just the CKP sensor itself.  I think I've only replaced one ever on an early Twincam.
Is this a common fail item?

I "hear" that it's common to fail. However my personal experience says they fail once in a while. I see many bikes with a lot of miles and the sensor is original. But they do fail.

FYI, this posts suggest an ohm reading against a know good sensor and a known bad sensor. You might check yours and see what it reads.

I've replaced enough to carry one on long rides...

I've never had one go bad. Cross country riding or local.

10 year old bike, 20K miles.  New CKP sensor cleared the code. We'll see how it runs now.

Any of the ones I've done haven't thrown a code but fixed the rough running. Probably done a dozen over the years. Mine and others....

I've never had one go bad,  my last one had 53,000 miles on it.   It was only replaced due to new engine build

I have almost 120,000 and coming up on 22 years on mine (2001 FLHT).  I removed one it time a few years ago to make some room to remove a K&N oil filter that was stuck. It was as clean as a whistle.

Now knocking on wood ! Every time I say something mechanical is working good  :banghead:

I remove mine for every oil change as my band wrench is a little to wide to fit in there, always looks good. Also 120,000+ miles.

Rode the bike on a long, hot funeral escort toady.  Ran fine.  I guess I'll put the old one on ebay as "For parts or not working"
