I service a lot of bikes for friends and friends of friends. I have been using the Custom Chrome Motor Factory oil filters but they are getting hard to find. Anybody have suggestions on a good aftermarket filter that costs less Harley's filter or is it time to start spending the $15 bucks for Harley's filter.
I use WIX 57148 or S&S 31-4103. I've heard the S&S is made by Wix, but I don't know that to be true or not. I'd price around on them, but they can be had for less than $15 each. I bought the S&S in a case quantity, so the price was decent.

I too use Wix, and bought a filter wrench at the auto-parts store, I forgot which store, that fits it perfectly.
Hiflo filtro black MSRP is $7.75 chrome $10.40 with 17MM nut
The S&S is made by Wix and in the USA. I like them and especially the very slightly smaller can outside diameter makes for easier on and off.

I've been using the chrome Hiflo Filtro race filters, with the 17mm nut and "high performance tri-fiber filtration media", #HF171CRC.
It is my understanding that Hiflo Filtro, while made in Thailand, is one of the few TUV approved motorcycle filters. They have been making OEM filters since the early 60's. They used to make the K&N filters, the original K&N filters with the nut on the end, prior to 2012ish, when K&N started having their oil filters made in Korea..
They seem to be made well, and I can get them on Amazon for about $11.00 each...
If I need one in a pinch, I go with WIX, but I've grown to like the convenience of that stupid nut on the end of the filter...
Well some on here don't like this company But I use their brake pads(never a problem) and the oil filters are 3 for $18.99 with nut on filter D2Moto

These filters can easily do that, 2 oil change per 1 filter

I used to do that with my pickup, but not for several years now.
Filters are cheap, less then the price of a 4 gallon fuel fill up. The Custom Chrome can be bought off eBay.
I bought a K&P reusable 10 years ago never thought about filters again. Bob

Sorry but I disagree with that logic. If the filter gets too dirty it will by-pass and I don't know any way to tell if that happens. I would be more inclined to go double the mileage on the oil and replace the filter half way, but I will keep doing 5000 mile intervals for both.

have the purepower reusable filter for years , 22 micron absolute flows 5 times the oil , seen some on ebay for 125 that's 100 off, they are like the K&P filter just a smaller micron rating, both great filters , this is the same filter K&N sells as their lifetime filter, the ones on ebay have the cool cover with the cooling fins I suppose

My local Indy shop sells Drags filter, chrome ones are $9.99 the black ones are $8.99. I was a big beliver in staying with HD 20-50 oil and HD filters. I also ran HD primary oil and trans fluid.
i made the switch on fluids and filters 10 years ago, never had an issue, The shop i buy from has been in business since the early 80's, and he has never had an issue with Drags Filters

Bet you wouldn't do that with the HD Prem5 if you had a gauge after the filter. They are lucky to make it to 5k. I've seen 2-3psi drop in 2500 kms. The 10 micron K&N did not show any drop in normal intervals.

When was it 2500? Maybe evos? My 99 FLHT specifies 5000 (all holes) and for the engine at the time there was only H-D 360 recommended by the MOCO.
Pretty sure the 2,500 was a dealer think, druming up business for the service department.
Very possibly was a dealer thing, they used to do my service years ago. But I was thinking that the 5000 did not come out until the synthetic, likely wrong though. Now I'm going to have to go back and look.
When I bought my '05 the dealer was pushing 2,500 service intervals.

Depends how and were you ride for your intervals, most owners manuals will tell you that. I have one guy comes in ever 5 k and his oil look like it came out of a diesel truck. I tell him it should be change more often and he tells me the dealer says ever 5 k, what ever floats your boat.
1959 to 1969 FLH manual, oil every 2000 miles and tranny every 5K. They were using the engine oil for the primary then though, talk about loading up a filter!

Fuel injection doesn't contaminate the oil anywhere close to what a carb engine does. Car manufacturers have also changed their recommended oil change intervals as well. :wink:

My 1989 Softail owners manual calls for 5,000 mile engine oil change interval.

LOL Yep ! I just used the WIX for the 1st time on my last service.. Label right out there in yer face.. Doesn't really matter to me but Yes it is very noticeable..

Better off to reverse that procedure..Just add oil and change the filter. Especially if running full syn.
That's how I used to do my Mack truck.
Full syn, send oil out for analysis, as long as it's within spec just change filters at recommended intervals.
The Napa Gold filters are Wix, just drop the 5 off the front of the part number, wix-57148, Napa-7148
Black filters only for me, and uh,, just peel the sticker and wipe the glue residue off with alcohol, or wd40 or whatever's handy at the time.

It's only partly about price. I believe the old Custom Chrome Motor Factory filters were better than HD filter and I like having them sent to my door rather than the 45 minute trip to the HD dealer.
I bought a PC Racing reusable filter a few years ago and I've never had a problem with it
Some people are under the illusion that anything "racing" is better quality when in fact the opposite is true because those engines are "always" torn down to change/improve performance so really no oil nor filter is used to the point that a daily driver is. :potstir:

I just bought a NAPA gold Napa-7148 based on this thread. Looks pretty good (Just changed my oil so it will be a few months before this filter gets used). The NAPA filter after tax was $13 and change. I don't believe that is any cheaper than the black twin cam filter from the local dealer. I have tried the K&N and Hiflo-Filtro black 171 versions also and both work fine, but I have heard other folks complaining about removal difficulty etc. I believe after all this I am going back to the OEM black version and stay there. Why try to change something that works fine?

With the exception of the drop-in one on my 76 anything I change oil on has gotten a Napa Gold filter for over 20 years.
