@55k miles I'm assuming it's never been off and it won't budge. Tried mapp gas and an impact. Any tips?
Dremel and a chisel.
Which direction are you trying to turn the nut?
Counterclockwise per the manual?
Just checking. :teeth:

You mean transmission secondary belt pulley nut on a 1999 big twin? And your manual states counterclockwise for loosening the nut?
Big Twins
Up till 2006
The transmission sprocket nut has left handed threads. Turn
the nut clockwise to remove from the main drive gear.
2007 on
The transmission sprocket nut has right handed threads. Turn
the nut counter clockwise to remove from the main drive gear.
I just drill them off. Two 1/4" holes, drilled through the face of the nut, at the flats, one wack with a chisel and it falls off. It is not worth the effort to save them!

I see some conflicting information here. The OP says 1999 which then should be a left hand thread. Turn a left hand thread clockwise to remove it. :nix:

Counterclockwise per the manual?
Is that an answer or a question?
On OEM Gearsets
Front sprocket nut
Five Speed=Left Hand Thread
Six Speed= Standard Thread
Clutch Hub Nut is Left Hand Thread on all.
OP: Don`t worry, even if you keep turning it in the wrong direction it will eventually come loose...
Bigger impact. I've got a few that something gonna come loose or break :SM:
As stated before...just drill a couple holes on into it and crack it with a cold chisel....be done in minutes....jimmy
No matter how you remove it, you still need to confirm left or right hand thread to buy the replacement nut. I say back up, look at the threads that are exposed, determine the direction and if left hand reverse your approach. If it doesn't budge go to plan B with a drill in your hand. At least the nut on route will be correct.
By the info left by the OP it is a 5 speed and therefore a left hand thread. There is a small chance the transmission has been changed to a later model (if a 6 speed) that may be right hand thread.
Yup, my bad since I'm use to working on the 6 speeds. I'll give it another try tonight.

No conflicting info in my post. Left handed thread you turn left to tighten and right to loosen
Right handed thread you turn right to tighten and left to loosen
Simples
Scotty Scotty Scotty. Read ALL of post #9, not just the part attributed to you. The OP stated he was turning "counter clockwise per the manual" (left) and you gave the opposite (albeit correct) information to turn it (right) clockwise to remove it. To me that is conflicting information. I simply supported your statement. :nix:

I see where PBI Sprockets is now offering that same good locking nut too.
