My father in law has a 2001 sportster he was out riding two days ago with no problems. He went to start bike this morning wont start and it is backfiring while trying to turn over. We checked for spark and fuel have both. Any insight as what the problem could be would be appreciated . Thanks

Loose or damaged/burned plug wire. Loose cap on the spark plugs itself. Stuck float bowl. Plugged air cleaner. Bad fuel, water in the fuel.
Low battery.
thanks Hossamania
Would like to hear a report back.
Checked the plugs and wires everything was good ,cleaned carb float is good, still wont start just cranks .
Do those have a crank position sensor? If so, it would be suspect.
ECM could be a problem also.
Ok thanks I will check that next.
2001 XL uses an ignition module with built in bank angle sensor (under the points cover, will have to drill out the factory rivets) that can fail and cause loss of spark. 32466-98B.
Thanks for all the help, cleaned the carb yesterday wires looked good but went ahead and changed them with plugs today fired right up.
