Hi all,
I'm getting ready to replace the belt/pulleys on my 2007 Softail Custom (FXSTC). I'm just starting to collect parts. This'll be the first time into the inner primary for me so I'd like to wait another 12 years before I go in again. :-)
Any advice on what else to replace, and what parts will be needed in total?
I think I'd like to replace the rotor while i'm in there - and perhaps the compensator as well?
I'll start
- 66 tooth rear pulley
- 32 tooth front pulley
- Belt
?

What's the rational with the rotor?
Hi Rusticwater,
I was concerned about the magnets moving or coming detached over time.
The compensator is the original, and from stories I've heard there's a much better update one available now?

use the S&S race for the IPB
have a real good look at the Compensator/Rotor and look at changing it

Also change all the seals while you have the pulley and race off.
Main drive gear seal
Quad seal
5th gear seal
Shifter shaft seal
Inner primary seal
O-ring on the starter and inner primary for you I think

5 speed and 6 speed are slightly different and I was thinking 5 speed when I was typing the reply.
Have a look at the parts microfiche that rigidthumper linked for you and you will see what seals are required for a 6 speed.

They are a much more superior fastener system. It will also give you the option of splitting the old nut to remove it if it gets ornery.
I have used the 3guys nut for years, they work much better than the stock nut.

Are you replacing both pullys with the stock sizes, 66/32?

My stock pulleys are 64/32 but I will replace with 66/32 - anyone have an opinion on whether I need an extra tooth on the belt?

I ask because I did a pulley swap on my 2007 FXSTC, but I swapped the front pulley from a stock 32T to a 30T.
I used HD belt p/n 40074-07, and it fits perfectly, with plenty of adjustment in either direction.

Best mod I ever did to that bike.
I was told that both the MY 2007 & 2008 Softails were geared excessively high.
It was also explained to me that this mod gives ~6% torque increase everywhere in the power band. I never measured it, but that data certainty feels accurate.
You should also expect ~300RPM increase when cruising at 75MPH.

75 mph? If I did that here the cops would lock me up, crush my bike, rape my wife, and sell my children.
We get booked for doing 1 mph (well 2 ks) over the posted speed limit here in Victoria Australia.
And COVID has made them worse - $5000 fine if I'm found more that 25ks from my house. Serious. Whatever you do, don't give up your guns or you'll end up like us.
