Buddy.....
I for one am looking forward to seeing your bike when you get it FINISHED!!!!

Tim,
I think you'll like her . I can't wait to see what handling differences the CCE sperical bearing kit in the swingarm and new 1" lowered front end with the Gold Racetech emulators will do. Trust me, we did not overdo the suspension and only need to decide on a front tire size. We'll either run the current larger 100/110 or go back to the factory 90/100. It depends on how the bike sits after she gets off the lift.
Mike,
Of course yours looks AWESOME....
Buddy....
I will look forward to seeing it when it's done...
Reddog~~

Update on my winter project...Got er done! Have about 60 miles on the fresh top end. EV27 cam and an 89 inch S&S stroker kit. Dumped the milled screamin eagle heads for a set of stockers to get the compression down to around 9.5 to 1. Swapped the Dyna S in favor of an Ultima ignition and I plan to add a VOES which was removed by a previous owner. Dyna Pro Pipe I picked up on Ebay modified to fit. New braided oil & brake lines. Still need to get her dialed in but this is one fun ride! Here's some pics of the bike back together.

Hey Buddy, Purty FXR! How long is that fork from the top of tube plug to the axle center?

Hey Buddy, Purty FXR! How long is that fork from the top of tube plug to the axle center?
Frank's sent longer length tubes the first time as thier standard length FXR is too long and we had to send them back for replacement. These were set at 25 3/8". The FXRT for example and some of the other models use 2" longer tubes standard. Although more expensive, Frank's tubes are simply the best. They are centerless ground then hard chromed and are not as shiny as other brands. They will not chip or peel and installed very easily using a plastic wedge on the triple trees. Been using them on builds for about 30 years.
Buddy~~
Thanks for sending me your photo of your FXR.....it's LOOKING GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
Can't wait to see photos of it with a different background!!!! You have done some very nice things to your FXR!!!!
Hopefully you will be splattering some bugs soon.....after you get all the other "bugs" worked out.....LOL

oh and omgtkk.....just gotta love another Arresting Red FXR2....congrats on a fine bike!!!
Tim,
No bugs at all with the bike on Saturday after almost 190 miles, she ran great. We DID get splattered by the love bugs on the back country roads and I'm still cleaning my cylinder fins out!! More importantly were the mods you asked about earlier with the Racetech Gold Valve Emulators in the 39mm front end with the 1" lowering kit and the CCE rear swingarm kit. Both are keepers and make a big difference in the handling. The bike sits level now instead of pitched up in the front and tracks like it's on rails up to 85mph. Now's the time not to screw with her anymore and just ride :teeth:. We are going out again for a run on Saturday and do the same thing, but a different route. The only thing left to do is take some more photos and change the headlight bulb.
Special thanks to Tim, Steve, Mikey and some other members for sharing their thoughts and ideas.
Best Regards,
Buddy....

yeah, I know .... there is a tool from MS that you can use to 'resize' them. I use that, then upload to photobucket ... then 'link' to them from here
if you go there ... look for 'imageresizer' in their power toys area .... if you need/want I can go find it and post up a link
Giddy UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
REALLY NICE Buddy !!!!
Thanks for makin the effort to put up some more pics for us !!!!!!!!!!
Bike looks FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad to hear too that yur not having any problems with it .... AWESOME !!
Mikey,
Thanks for the compliment. This was a long labor of love between my best friend, Bro here and myself.
BTW, at 100mph my Bro's 106" Shovel Dresser was hauling the friggin mail and still pulling with two up . If you take pride in your bike and the work you do, the rest comes along with it. She still needs some finishing touches like maybe a 113 like RD's :teeth:.
Nice work Buddy she sure looks perdy!
It's sooo nice to see so many really nice old gals show up here  HD does not build them like this anymore and we no doubt own the best handlers ever built. Great job guys, keep em that way.
Lakerat,
Tell me more about your directional upgrades. Mine are new stock HD's, but I'd like to get them smaller and tighter to the lower tree and rear fender like yours.
Buddy, they are some leftovers from an old friends' kit chopper. I have seen them at swap meets, so they are pretty generic. The rear mount on mine is just a couple of 3/8-24 nuts welded together for the offset with a button head allen bolt from the inside of the fender. The front is just a fork mount clamp from the same chopper build, shimmed to fit my 39mm forks. Correct size is available, but they were free.
Wow there are some very nice FXR's in this THREAD.
Buddy your bike has come out awesome!!!.
Lakerat there is always something very cool about a front spoke wheel and a fat boy "styled" solid wheel on the back.....very nice!!!
lucille I would love to see more photos of your front end close up.....and read more about it.
Jeff (Black Diamond) very sweet......I wish you would go back to your original THREAD here in the EVO section and complete the THREAD with your updated photos and what you did to your bike......if you can't find the THREAD that easily just go up to the top of the EVO page and click on FXR Index as I have indexed the THREAD there......
drs23 nice!!!
dte8dom.....wow it was fun to see an original 1985 "Rootbeer" FXRC.....thanks for posting and sharing.....and you are right of course to it's exclusivity.......
TLMitchell wonderful bike......
Pirate there is always something to be said for a "blacked" out FXR.....you couldn't put enough pictures on of your bike....it looks AWESOME.....and black just looks so so so much faster even sitting still.......
This is slowly becomming a great THREAD, one can only hope the pictures will remain.....
Thank you everyone!!!

Heres the latest find. 1994 FXLR bone original with 1697 miles on er
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4117/4822521974_bd14bb12a7_b.jpg)
Wow .....how much did you pay for that beautifull....not even run in yet ....FXR....whatever it was I luv it....
The FXLR's are my personal favorite out of any other Harley made with 94 being in my opinion the best year with all the technical upgrades. You can just bolt up the Twin Cam clutch hub and starters for one, among other nice options. I had a very nice blue 94 FXLR but had to sell it and was sorry I did. It has way less miles than the other one and in a color I also like much better so it all worked out pretty good. Bought it from the original owner that was a very honest straight up fella. The miles won't stay low for long with me owning it. :bike:
RD,
You know how to steal them :teeth:.You also have personal mail.

Might as well do my first post here with pictures of my ride:
Started out as a 1989 FXRS-SP.
Almost nothing left of that, though except for the frame. Engine is now 96", transmission has been
updated to all 94-up (splined shaft).

Nice
Nice looking Phil. I'd read your description over on rmh, but don't think I'd seen any pics yet. I sure like the painted air cleaner cover better than chrome. Did the same thing on my Shovel FLT.
Here's what I did to the engine:
http://www.ah61.com/rebuild/ (http://www.ah61.com/rebuild/)
Except for the case machining, machining heads for compression releases, and stroker plates, it was all done by me. Lower end, balancing, rod races, CCing/decking heads, truing/shortening cylinders, valve job, etc...
Phil
The advantages of working in a shop while building your motor. I had to farm out the machine work, but I've had the guy do 4 motors for me so far with zero problems. Pics of both my FLTs post #95 in the "show your evo" thread.
Yeah, since I'm out of the bizz, I'd have to farm that out now. I am setting up somewhat of a shop at home, though.
See: http://www.philb.ca/?p=22 (http://www.philb.ca/?p=22) Added a press and a few more things since, but still not set up for machining.

I have to give you a call and hear about this purchase.....OH MY! Looks beautiful! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Also your post #171 your 93 LOOKS great with the 21" Wheel.....hmmm where did you find such a NICE WHEEL? ? ?
:smiled:
Regards,

Reddog,
Nice pick up! Stone Cold Blue....The rarest of the FXR2's, 3's and 4's. Will your first mod be the EVL-3010 cam install?
Thanks fellas, I really didn't expect to find this FXR 2, not at all. Of course one of the FXR's has to go. Kinda sucks as I just got the 93 the way I wanted it. I really like the 93 FXLR as it runs and rides great and is more suited as a daily commuter bike. The FXR 2 is a bit fancy for the likes of me however I have to say it is one sweet ride. Man, it looks like a piece of jewelry on 2 wheels. That color is even better in person. One of these is gonna git sold and I'm leanin towards keepin the FXR 2. I did sell my black 94 FXLR that had like 1700 miles on it and regretted it ever since and don't want to make that mistake again. I sold it because I bought an 08 FXDC and thought it was a good move. BIG MISTAKE. I couldn't wait to sell that thing and get back on an FXR. I like takin the turns so my first mod may be the suspension with a set of Progressive 440's on the rear and their springs in the fork tubes. Oh, yeah I just snapped up a new W6 cam off ebay as I have been wanting to give one of them a try. I do not know why but every one of the CVO FXR's I have ridden are exceptionally smooth both in ride, engine operation and shifting of the transmission. IMHO the FXR models are the best all around bikes H-D ever made. That wheel made all the difference eh
keep the FXR2....GREAT color

Removable wind shield and bags were factory on the FXRS convertible model but they also had dual discs up front. You could add the convertible pieces to any FXR as an add on.

The Sport-Convertible model came with the quick-detachable leather and canvas saddle bags and they were also available for purchase for many years.
If you have them and all of the mounting hardware, hold on to them. The brackets alone are known to fetch $500 a set and that quick-detach hardware is pretty rare.

If you are referring to my bikes, they are both have evo style engines. What may be throwing you off is the Axtell ductile barrels that use a base stud/ head bolt setup vs the oem style through studs that oem Evo and TC engines use.

You're right, I just assumed those were shovel cylinders. A couple friends each had early FXRs with shovels. They ran great, they figured since they were first year models, that the factory took extra care in putting the motors together.

Cheapness. Friends dont let friends use $50 ebay rods on 130hp engines. Wont do that again.

I didn't change the oil pump because of the iron cylinders. The Zippers ProFlow is a geroter type oil pump and is a pretty nice unit. Zippers stopped making them years ago. I bought a small cache of them that I found.
No issues at all with the buttons. Added value is a can sleep at night not worrying if they have popped out, plus they are so easy to install and remove.
These cylinders actually run about the same temp as aluminum cylinders and I really like the separate base stud and head bolt design.
Unlike every aluminum cylinder, these ductile iron cylinders distort very little. Checking runout with and without torque plates shows practically no difference. And because there isn't a long steel stud and a aluminum cylinder with different expansion rates, gasket sealing is also a non issue.
All in all, I can say enough good things about ductile cylinders.
Love the pump and cylinders. The split shaft makes them real nice for FXR's.
About any Zippers Pro-Flow pump will kick butt against anyone elses pump...Especially on the Evacuation side, Where it is Needed.
No One Can ever ...Never say enough good about Axtell cylinders. Tough as a Ten inch Tiger Turd!

The early ProFlow oil pumps did not have a split drive shaft. This one does and yes, it is very convenient in an FXR type drive train.

Any thoughts on the iron cylinders doing big miles in a hot country?
When we get out into the country areas in summer, temps of 100F are pretty common. Shovels suffer badly.

IME, the shovels that suffer badly in heat are typically high mileage engines, with old shovel type hydraulic lifters, point ignitions, etc.
I live in southeastern North Carolina and rode a shovel for many years as my sole means of transportation, many of which were with a large motorcycle club. Lots of miles my shovel. But it was built very well, modern lifters, CV carb, modern electronic ignition, STD heads, tuned on a dyno, etc. That old shovel with iron cylinders did just fine in stop and go grid locked traffic, was ridden all of the country, no issues. Over the last twenty five years of living in NC, aside from my TC bagger, I can count the number of aluminum cylinders I have owned on one hand.
But hey, I am not going to continue with this debate on iron cylinders. This is an FXR thread.
Not meant to be a debate.
I'm torn between building my engine into something else, or buying a crate engine.
I like the cylinders. I've still got a set of 1250's here for a future Buell project so I'm just curious how well the iron ones would handle the heat in Aus.

"and FL transmission"
Ed, I have a 5 spd gearset from a 2004 Roadglide, what case would I need to do what you plan? Delkron?
There are about four different things to address here.
1. My Zippers/Smack-A-Hoe TC124 is based on an S&S case with evo type rear engine mounts. The FL case that I amusing with this is from an evo era FL with a bottom oil pan. I think its from a '98. With this trans case I have to use an oil pan that is modified to clear various portions of the frame, kickstand and right side foot control.
2. To put a conventional TC and transmission from a bagger into an unmodified FXR chassis also requires a modified oil pan for the same reasons as mentioned above.
3. To put a TC FL trans case into an FXR chassis, it is best to use a '99 or '00 trans case as the bolt pattern allows an FXR inner primary to simply bolt on. In '01, a bolt hole on the transmission was moved, prohibiting the easy installation of the FXR inner primary. The FXR inner primary is only needed if the intent is to run mid controls. Which I see no reason not to run mid controls on an FXR.
4. The 2004 gear set that you have will simply bolt into any Harley OEM FXR case that originally came with a splined main shaft. The real upgrade though is the shifter drum and pawl from that 2004. Many FXR owners get gear sets from late model five speeds but fail to swap out the drum, pillow blocks and pawl. The newer pawl uses a longer bushing. Some hacks will swap out the pawl and simply add washers but the correct way is to swap out the bushing. Swapping out the bushing takes maybe five minutes using the correct tool from Jims.
Helps a lot, thanks Ed.
Add, mid controls a must.

Just got this 1992, 18,450 miles. Florida salt air got to the aluminum, looks rough, going to powder coat. The wiring I've looked at so far looks surprisingly good. Inside of gas tank looks good also. Going to be a good project. Selling saddlebags replacing with clam shells.
Curious about your reasons for switching from P bags to clam shells.
The clam shells look good, I guess, but they aren't worth a dam for carrying stuff. Those p bags with the mounting brackets are known to fetch a good price.
Your probably aware, but just in case, there is somewhat of an FXR craze happening right now. These bikes and their pieces are in high demand. Anything you take off that bike is almost worth gold. I recommend not selling anything off that bike. Put it in boxes and store it away.
That '92 is a pretty good year for the FXR. Has just about all of the latest stuff. '94 brought the newer style primary cases but not much else was changed until the cVO models.
Always appreciate your insight Ed. Your right the clam shells are likely the worst functional bag in existence, but I have liked the looks since they were introduced (when it was unpopular to like FXR's) and need to sell some things from this bike to finance the changes I want to make. The footboards and shift/brake controls are coming off for mid pegs and brake/ shift. I can't find any mid stuff for under $400.00, guys used to give that away.
Those floorboard controls will also bring a few nickels. A complete set of mid controls will typically sell for abut $350. A good deal of the components are available from V-Twin and are better than oem quality. If you do get an oem set of mid controls, do yourself and your riding friends a favor and replace the shifter shaft with a new one.
"replace the shifter shaft with a new one."
Are you referring to the shaft that goes through the inner primary?

"replace the shifter shaft with a new one."
Are you referring to the shaft that goes through the inner primary?
Yes.
Just to clarify, the piece I am referring to is a steel shaft with an arm welded to on end. It goes through the tube in the inner primary. It has a shift lever attached to one end and linkage attached to the other end. The splines on oem units are often worn out and the the weld between the shaft and the arm can often be one shift away from breaking. They typically break when the bike is several hours away from home. When it does break, and it will, harley dealerships will be of no help as they won't weld and will not have a new piece in stock. The only way to repair this is to weld the two pieces back together, and then remove the inner inner primary. Think impact wrench, big sockets, not stuff people typically carry in their tool roll. Like I said, replace it. The ones offered by V-Twin are pretty good.
While getting some top end work done the shop found my shift shaft loose, splines worn down, and ready to break. Luckily I got it replaced with a heavy after market piece before being stranded out on the road somewhere. The shift shaft is a known weak point to keep an eye on.

I would bet the heat shield from an Evo FXR would bolt right on or could be made to fit. An original shovel head crossover shield may be hard to find as they were only used for a couple of years.
Crossover covers are the same

Keeping aluminum shiny is a commitment, for sure. Great looking bike.
A LOONG TIME AGO I found this stuff call Zoop Seal that you apply on aluminum to preserve the shine. It was supposed to last for 5 years. Never tried it so I don't know how well it works. I do know that there have been other similar products introduced since then like sharkskin etc. so I'll be looking into them as I believe the downside of using this kind of stuff dulls or clouds the shine and the newer products are supposed to be a lot better, and let the shine stay bright for a long time. They even stripped the black paint off the switch housings and polished them. I love the look and will be lookin into gettin something on the polished aluminum to save myself a lot of work.
Latest version of the '82 FXRS minus the shovel engine and a 113" evo installed while the shovel bottom end is being redone.
Very nice. What pipes are they???
BKACHE, nice, 113"will roast that back tire without breaking a sweat.
Thanx - the clutch was the weak link to roast the rear tire. Now that a pro-clutch is in it, the tire has lost traction a few times.
The shovel engine is going to be going together in my basement. Prolly back in the frame in the spring. Since it is a short timer the exhaust for the engine is a $50 purchase off ebay. Off of a Fatboy. I did have to make a bracket off the trans. These pipes feel about 4 times heavier than the RBRacing LSR pipe that rides on the shovel engine.
Sweet ride, by the way!

Too bad you're getting rid of that wheel, it looks great. Sweet looking ride you have there. Is that a TP 121 motor?
Thanks! Yes its growing on me, not sure of the width but 3+ as the tire is a lot bigger than it first looks like.
I should introduce properly..'99 with a 121 tp (so that's what a .650 cam sounds like!) Baker 6 speed. Arresting Red I believe.

Rhino, you did that right, everywhere. Can you tell us about the swingarm/axle size?
My recently refreshed 89 FXRP.
It was a basket case when I got it a few months ago. The gas tank and frame had so much paint on them that they had to be sand blasted to get it all off. I didn't go through the engine or tranny, both seemed to be OK. I just added an EV27 cam...
I went to mid controls, hydraulic clutch to clear the brake pedal, fairing, T-bars, seat, Thunder Header, chain conversion, new bearings/races in wheels and neck.
Nice job Mule, is that a HD hydraulic clutch?

Hey Bkache,
How was that shovel to evo swap? Did you have to replace anything with the primary or did she bolt right up?
Thanks
Hi BTalley,
The evo swap was quite straight forward. Left side did need a bit of grinding so the mid controls would not scrape/bind. The right side was a bit more difficult. The shovel clutch end support would not work with the 1.5" wider 113"'er. I made a new bracket. The brake lever needed a good 3/8" spacer so as not to hit the nosecone. The Fat Boy pipes ($50 craigslist purchase) needed a bracket to attach the pipes to the trans case. Lots of weight from the stock pipes to rest on the '82 FXRS rear mount. The shovel RBRacing LSR pipe is much lighter. I plan on swapping the shovel engine back in by Easter. 113" evo will then be for sale. The stock FB pipes are a bit more restrictive but still had plenty o power for the light bike. I did take a hammer to the back of the softtail pipes to get them to miss the rear shock.

My 92 fxr. Yes basic black and chrome. About 94 thou on the clock now. I rescued it about 7 years ago.
Just discovered this thread so I'll play too. My FXR2 purchased two years ago. It had sat for a long time before coming to me. Tires still had new nips on them but were 12 years old. That's how much it had set.
Came from northern PA and had been stored in a barn. It showed it too. Fortunately the paint survived well. A lot of the chrome not-so-much. Front wheel was eaten through from the inside out. Someone had put an ugly uncomfortable short drag bar on it for a handlebar and forward controls sometime in its life. For someone with a 29.5" inseam it was all but unrideable. Especially since the carburetor was as rotten as the front wheel.
Over the course of two or three months it came back in shape. Fortunately it made it to me in February so the timing worked out. New wheel, bars, risers, switch housings, etc. It actually cleaned up very nicely. It had enjoyed good care before being put out to pasture.
I'd forgotten how bad those stock single piston calipers were. Good gawd even my old ass could outride those things. So better brakes front and rear. After a new carb and failed cam sensor being replaced with a single fire kit the engine is great. Really smooth little Evo. Bone stock internally and it does everything it should.
Neither of the pics are the bike today. The pic at the old gas station is close though. For some reason I don't now recall the sissy bar is off the bike that day. Must of been in the middle of something.
Of the three it was this one's turn today. Gorgeous afternoon and it went 150 miles going nowhere in particular.
When I tossed the forward controls I went with the old FXR cop bike footboards. Just way more comfortable for me and I was lucky enough to score parts cheap. About the only thing I'm thinking of still doing is adding a front crash bar. Partly because I like the idea of crash bars and partly because hanging pegs off of it would give one more place to rest feet or stretch legs.
This one is a fun bike though. It looks great and runs wonderfully. Dialed in and just a nice ride.
Well that cleaned up nicely.
Mine had also sat for many years. Over 10. Guy I got it from said he did most of his own work on it. After I got it home and started fixing things that were wrong or worn out, I wanted to go back to his house and just confiscate all his tools. But probably would have just been a hammer, maybe some vice grips. :turd: It came with a service manual but doubt he ever read it

I was lucky in that regard. In mine's life it seems to have been pretty well and pretty correctly taken care of while it was active. Then it just sat for a long time. Honestly aside from oil changes I'm not sure mine ever got a lot of service. It was just pretty untouched (in a good way). Nice reliable old machine. When I got it 2 1/2 years ago it came to me with about 22k miles on it. Now showing about 29k and it's just a happy little bike that doesn't seem inclined to give me any trouble. It's next winter chore will be lifters and a cam bearing. Just because they're lifters and it'll be 30+ thousand miles.
Nice ride, 2Lane. Of course, I'm biased.
Hmmmm. Calls himself 2Lane. Has a red bike, and I'm betting more than one. Sounds familiar somehow.

You can feel plagiarized or honored but I stole a note, or several notes, from yours. Your research, time and documentation say to me a lot of time when I was bringing mine back from its storage maladies. For two years now though it has just been a fun bike to ride.
Tucked in for the evening.

How is it's new valve train package working out?
Nice job Deye.
Is that a factory police special fairing?

Yes. Sorry for the late reply.
Turbo, so far ok.
VERY NICE!!!!!!! DO those type fairings affect the handling on these FXR's as I see many with them.

Again sorry for the late reply. I had a brand new FXR in 1992, no fairing, and now with this 92' with the fairing, no difference I can tell, except now I have protection from the elements. After owning 2 roadglides and a couple batwings, IMO this is the best fairing of all of them. Overloading the saddlebags, and a tour pac has the most effect on handling in my experience.
1991 FXRS Low Rider Convertible. Original owner 13K miles. Very original bike.
