Title: Upgrades and PM
Post by: IronButt70 on February 18, 2019, 12:31:24 PM
Should be getting my bike(17 FLSTC 37k miles) back in the next week after 2+ months of wreck repairs. Since the factory warranty will have expired I'm doing some upgrades and PM. Here's what I'm doing so far.
TTS100 cams
New inner cam bearings
New lifters- using stock push rods
New cam chain tensioner pads
Rocker lockers and new head breathers.
New cam and sprocket bolts.
All new gaskets and o-rings as needed.

Are there any other recommendations while I'm into the engine? I've never worked on a TC motor but I have wrenched on everything from lawn mowers to high performance outboard and offshore race engines to jet engines so I'm pretty confident I can handle this. I have all the tools needed and the service manual. Any advise or things to look for would be greatly appreciated. TIA

You will like those cams.   I think you have a good plan laid out.

You might want to grab a cam sprocket spacer kit to have on hand. They aren't too expensive. Easier to have it and not need it then.... well you know.

If i remember right you cant use the stock  pushrods on the tts cams smaller base circle. Someone else will chime in.

Rear cam sprocket spacers are $5.34 each. Most likely you won't need to change from the spacer that's in there.

25729-06  SPACER, CAMSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET ALIGNMENT 0.100 IN THICK (USE AS REQUIRED)    1    5.34
25731-06  SPACER, CAMSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET ALIGNMENT 0.110 IN THICK (USE AS REQUIRED)    1    5.34
25734-06  SPACER, CAMSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET ALIGNMENT 0.120 IN THICK (USE AS REQUIRED)    1    5.34
25736-06  SPACER, CAMSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET ALIGNMENT 0.130 IN THICK (USE AS REQUIRED)    1    5.34
25737-06  SPACER, CAMSHAFT DRIVE SPROCKET ALIGNMENT 0.140 IN THICK (USE AS REQUIRED)    1    5.34

Thanks. The instructions that came with the S&S inner cam bearings made mention of those spacers. Local dealer has them in stock if needed.

Since I'm going to have the rocker covers off is there any advantage to pulling the heads to up the compression ratio a smidgen with a thinner head gasket? Would that help the performance with the TTS100 cams or would it not be worth the extra work?

If you have the time, and not concerned with the cost of the gaskets, I say do it. I wouldn't expect night and day difference, but every little bit helps.

"I" would replace the o-rings at the cylinder base if it were mine. To far into it at that point to not do it. You do not need to do anything with the rings, just put the cylinders back on and go.

The reduced quench alone would make me wanna do it.  Get a little detonation protection at least.

Be careful of "project creep", because once you have the heads in your hands, it's easy to say "I should replace the valve stem seals", and once the valve are in your hand, "a good valve job is money well spent", and since the heads are off, and you are replacing cylinder o-rings anyway, might as well chuck them up in the lathe and zero the deck height, etc.
If I was 8 bolts, and a little time away from, having the heads in my hands...I'm a big fan of .030" quench :)

I pulled my heads just for the .030HG. After I saw what they looked like I had to send them off to be worked over.
My new crank turned into a whole new engine also...

This is the reason I swear I will not pull the heads any more. Way too many "may as well being it is apart".
Pull the heads, check the valves, send them out for guides, valves and seals. May as well clean up the ports and mill a few thousandths off. Oops,  the pistons are .008" down the hole, pull the cylinders to get the pistons at zero deck. Next think you know you have a 150 HP/150 FTLBS 124" with $10k invested!

Since this is probably my last bike I want the most reliability I can get without busting the budget.

You want dependability? IMO, the more you alter from factory the less dependable it becomes. Leave the heads on, it isn't worth it.

New head breathers going in. The bike is at the dealer for wreck repairs and they had the primary cover off. I asked about the comp and they said it looked good.

Got a call today that my bike was ready for pickup. Went to pick it up and started looking it over. The black powder coating on the inner primary cover was snow white. Their were finger prints all over most of the chrome parts. They cleaned up the prints and took care of the white out but how can they call me and expect me to accept this. Then they told me that the battery light would not go out because the ECM was looking for a siren according to the DW. WTF. I start the bike up and drive away, speedo not working. Now I'm fuming. Turns out someone plugged the speedo harness into the siren harness. How could they have test ridden this and not noticed the speedo wasn't working? Now speedo works and no more battery light. Bike runs fine and when I get home I put it up on the lift. Come out later and notice oil running down the side of the oil tank under the fill. Pull the fill cap and more oil runs out. The system was over filled by almost  a quart. Lucky it was in the 50s today. Tomorrow I'm going over the bike with a fine toothed comb. Then I'm going back to have a little chat with the store manager. To say I'm pissed is an understatement. Not what I expected after nearly 3 months.

Tell him you want to talk to the goofball that worked on your bike. If he won't tell you then look at your paperwork and there will be a name or employee number which everybody will also know. Then educate him. I'd bet he's a peon.

That is what's baffling about this. I've been using this dealership for years and the tech that worked on it has been there a long time and has worked on my bike in the past. Never had anything like this happen before.  :emsad:

:agree:

I modded a car once.  I thought "OK this will be my fast car, it's going to be cool!"  Pretty simple bolt-on parts, nothing crazy.  $6k later a valve failed and destroyed the engine.  Never again.     Live and learn.

Dyno-Jet PV. Already have the base map from fuel-moto for the cam and exhaust. Will use auto tune to tweak it. Autotune worked well when I went to stage 1 so I'm expecting the same with the new cam. If I can't get it to where I like it there are good tuners not too far away.

Project nearly complete. Fired it up last night on the lift. No strange sounds and it idled like it should. Will finish buttoning everything up today and take a test ride. Looking for the torque this cam is noted for. Butt dyno standing by.  :smiled:

What a difference. Especially down low. Don't know what happened with the base map Fuel Moto sent me for this cam and stage one exhaust but it was a no go. Bike wouldn't even idle. Run rough for 10-15 seconds then shut down. Flashed back to previous map. Going to call them about that. Took a 30 mile ride this afternoon. The exhaust definitely sounds different. Really noticeable when rolling hard on the throttle. I thought there might be slightly more valve train noise but I'm not sure. I always ride with music playing in my helmet so it is probably nothing.
Just a few takes from what I found. OEM inner cam bearings looked OK but I think the S&S ones will last longer without the cages. 3 of the 4 lifters looked good. The rollers were bright and shiny with no visible wear. The one from the rear exhaust had no shine left on the roller. No pittin or galling so I don't know if that means anything. The outer chain tensioner had grooves in it and was maybe 20% worn down. The inner tensioner had practically no wear marks at all.
It's been ages since I did any serious wrenching and it was fun getting my hands all oily and my shirt all sweaty. Looking forward to riding the trails near Laconia in June. Most of it will probably be 2 up with my oldest grand daughter so the extra torque will get a good workout. Thanks to all who chimed in with advise.  :chop:

Turns out it was Dynojet that provided me with the base map and not Fuel Moto. FM told me they have no experience with the TTS100 cams and couldn't offer any help.  :idunno:
Waiting to hear back from DJ.
On another note, are the OEM cams worth anything?

That would have been my first choice too. May try 24501 too. Thanks.

Here's a non related something I noticed today. Went for a 175 mile ride. All  back roads up and mostly superslab home. For some reason I seem to have about 3 more PSI of oil pressure than I had before the cam, lifter and bearing swaps even after the oil gets up to operating temp. Any explanation for that?  :idunno:

Loaded and ran the 24503 map yesterday afternoon. Still idles rough until the engine warms up but doesn't shut down like the first map they sent. A lot of popping during deceleration and between shifts. A revised map arrived today via email so I will test it this afternoon.

Did the first auto tune run. Start up idle is much better and the low end pull is just what I was looking for with this cam.  For those familiar with the PV tuner would more auto tune runs bring any noticeable improvements? TIA

I'd do at least three to 5 narrow band ( basic) sessions, using the compare function to see the difference between each session.

Need more than just the wide bands- gotta have some way to incorporate the data into the map- use Twin Scan WEGO and wide bands, and manually enter the changes in the map, or buy/use the Autotune Pro kit from DJ.

Now have a few k miles on the cam swap and have done 3 auto tune runs. Love the way the bike runs and the extra pull down low but have noticed a 3-4 MPG drop in fuel mileage. Is that normal or will a professional tune help make that better? TIA

May just be you're enjoying the ride more ( with a corresponding usage of the loud handle) :)
Post the current map in the bike so we can check for anomalies?

I like to think I'm pretty computer literate but have not been able to figure out how to get the tune I'm using from the PV to post here.

Open PV software in PC/laptop. Hook everything PV up to bike/PC, turn bike on, run/stop in run position, click on "Get Tune".  Once downloaded, "Save as", select location and name for the file.
Open HTT, find this post, select "reply".
Write a sentence such as "Here is my current map"
Click on preview. Click on "Attachments and other options"
Click on "Choose file" under "Attach"
Click on the down arrow on the lower right hand side of the box marked "file name". The top choice should be your newly saved file. Select it by clicking on "open" lower right.
Click post. File should be attached as follows:

So I have to have the PV connected to a pc/laptop and the bike at the same time? No way for me to do that ATM. PC in office, bike in garage and no laptop. Have to see if I can borrow a laptop.

Figured it out. Here's the current map. And FWIW I don't think I've really been on the throttle enough to drop the mileage by 10%.

To address the milage, I leaned out the Lambda table, and changed the timing slightly. You'll have to run autotune again to see if it helps.
Usual disclaimers apply- YMMV, use at your own risk, may cause leakage, etc...

Thanks. I'll give it a whirl. Don't want to have the engine run leaner/hotter just to save a few MPG. Was cause leakage a funny?  Nice thing about this motor after 41k miles is it doesn't leak a drop of oil.

I hear all these side effects from meds on TV, and leakage was one of them 😳😁

Went for a 100 mile ride on your map. Absolutely perfect day for it. 30-35 miles at 70-75MPH and the rest at 55-60MPH. Bike ran great and averaged 46.6 MPG. Only thing noticeable was some occasional pop during deceleration/engine braking. Not enough to worry about. Am going to run an auto tune session later this week on your map. Was going to ride the same 100 mile loop. Is that to long of a ride for an auto tune log? TIA.

I tell guys to combine neighborhood riding( lots of lower speed stop n go) with highway riding at sustained speeds to get as much closed loop data as possible.
