Looks like I'm gonna have to get into it and take the tranny apart. 87 fxr 5 speed. Should be fun as its my first time doin this one. I've pretty good local Indy shop resources, but would like to put it here to get any more insite on the job. Thanks gurus, I'll keep ya posted.
Hopefully the broken spring did not go through the gears.
Bummer just had to do this sept 2018
If you dont have this heres a good watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv9FzI6MTKg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv9FzI6MTKg) helped me out and at least its winter time.
Have you looked at going with one of these? https://www.denniskirk.com/baker-drivetrain/anti-overshift-ratchet-shift-pawl-assembly-555-56.h11075.prd/H11075.sku#reviews (https://www.denniskirk.com/baker-drivetrain/anti-overshift-ratchet-shift-pawl-assembly-555-56.h11075.prd/H11075.sku#reviews)
Its not to bad of a job. Pulling the race for the primary bearing is the only PITA with it.
When you order parts, You can get an improved pawl from Baker, and a improved primary bearing race from S&S.
While you have it apart, check and remove any sharp edges on the plate that the spring wraps around, at the end of shifter shaft. Mine had sharp edge that probably caused my spring to fail by wearing/scoring it.
I just replaced the stock shifter arm this week with the Baker one. One dissapointment, the groove for the retaining ring was not cut too far inboard, so the retaining ring would not snap into it. I had to hold the shifter arm from inside the trans to put the shift arm on, sure hope I never have to take if off again to fix a leaky seal or something.

I too had trouble with this snap ring locking in with washer on shaft I found the seal for shifter shaft in my jims kit was to thick the one covered in rubber.
Only way I found is to get the Oem seal with metal exposed it was just right to get the washer and ring to seat on shaft
