My friend is looking at putting 12" bars on her sporty. How long of wires/cables am i going to need. or anyone know of a good set i can purchase from somewhere.

Barnettclutches.com has always been very helpful when I am looking to change cables due to handlebar changes, etc. Give them a call !
Also Burly brand makes a whole kit that includes wiring extensions and the correct cables and brake hoses if needed. If the wiring does indeed need extended also. Verify weather they have the correct year and whatnot. Drag Specialteis carries them.
Last time I did my friends Road King the kit was more economical than ordering everything separate.
So be sure to look into those, may make it easier for you. :up:

NAMZ sells the Extensions (PnP) for the harnesses or you can make you're own with a kit as well.
What year Sportster? I did a friend's '96 883 and also ran the wires in the new bars that were 10" I think. Pulled the headlamp to get to the connectors and found a lot of extra wire crammed in there. Was able to drill the bars and snake all of it through the bars and back to the connectors with an inch or maybe two extra. I think (and my mind's been slipping lately) that HD used the same handlebar wires for pretty much everything including wideglides. Which would explain the longer than needed wires and the rat's nest you might find pulling the headlamp out.

Harley puts out a comprehensive handlebar guide that is usually updated several times a year. If you google "harley handlebar installation requirements" you should be able to find a pdf copy to download. It's also on the Harley SIP site or you could go to Harley's online store, plug in your bike info, and pick any handlebars for your bike, then under "further info" or such there should be a link to the current version of "Handlebar Installation Requirements".
Anyway once you get the guide, it has dimensions for all the handlebars that Harley sells along with cable recommendations, wiring extensions, and original OEM info. Even if you're planning to use a third party handlebar, cables, etc. you can use the recommended Harley parts and cross reference them to another manufacturer's product.
