Title: Cams & heads?
Post by: Eccool on January 20, 2023, 01:39:18 PM
2020 Road Glide Limited, currently completely stock.

1.  Going to change the cam.  Any preference on the CR 480 vs. the Star 30/30?  Looking for 6th gear passing power at 70 or 75.

2.  Anybody ever do the heads on a stock displacement M8?  Going to do this mainly out of curiosity.  I've never owned a bike with ported heads and I want to see what it's like.

Any and all info is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

The axiom that always proves true: horsepower is in the heads.
Talk to your porter about which cam they recommend based on your goals.
Be realistic about your goals and how you ride.
Also, take a look at Fuel Moto's sticky post above with 2023 cam comparisons, that will give you an idea on cams, knowing yours will be a little diferrent based on headwork and exhaust.

Re-reading your post looking for power to pass at 70 mph in 6th gear, the Woods 22xe would meet your goal nicely. But again, head work will change yours up a bit.

Downshift and it probably won't matter.

Hey, hey, hey, he said 6th gear, now you go and change parameters!  :potstir:

Having said all that, the 480 is a proven cam, works well, and is versatile in many diferrent builds.
It's also cheaper than the 30-30, if that matters.

If you're looking for passing power in 6th gear with a stock motor you don't need headwork.
Stock heads flow 300+ which is more than enough for what you want.
Cam, pipe & a tune will make you happy.
Headwork will only lighten your wallet.
All this from a guy that ports heads. :smiled:

75 MPH in 6th is about 2700 RPM, so you want a low-mid cam.   TTS100, Woods 22XE, Andrews 462, or CR 460 will do nicely. Proper tune with new components yields best results.

I did the CR480 on my 114.  Does exactly what you are wanting.  Search the Dyno Thread for CR480 and I think you will like what you see.

Thanks, RigidThumper.  There are so many options, but after almost a dozen weeks of study, I've just about decided on the TTS100.  I keep oscillating between it and the 22XE or even the Harley "Torque Cam".  I want maximum torque in the regime in which I ride 99% of my miles . . . droning along the highway on my 2019 FLHTK at 75 mph in 6th gear for hours between fuel stops.

Also thinking that there's no need to go with the S.E. oil pump and cam plate; that the original plate in my '19 will work just as well with the new upgraded Harley oil pump.  So that saves hundreds of dollars!

Cam pipe and gear will make you happy.  That said if you two really want that passing power at 70-75 mph in 6th gear.  From my experience no one thing would do it as well as changing the sprocket and or pulley. Thats smaller sprocket and or bigger pulley. Pulley is easy and cheap to do at tire change time.

I have a softail so the gearing is slightly different than on the touring models. But man that speed is now at the bottom of the maximum torque range. So crack the throttle its already like being in 5th. Power is always right there. Acceleration from a dead stop on is improved. Downside it will take a little more fuel on a long 75mph road trip.
