Title: 1975 XLCH 1000 Compensator Gear
Post by: cajun1957a on March 15, 2009, 04:01:10 PM
Can someone tell me if there is a definate need for the compensator gear on a 1975 1000 xlch.  Im building a motor for a buddy and he picked this up in a basket.  We have the lower end all done and noticed that there is only a gear for the drive chain and not the compensator assembly.  My 68 xlch also only has the gear, but my 65 xlh has the compensator.

What benefit is it and did some of the xlch's not use it?  His motor is now totally brand spanking new inside and out, but I was wondering if I should buy him the gear or go as it is.  The manuals make no mention of Not using it.

Early XLCHs used a gear to save weight and have a closer profile primary cover. I've never noticed any change in the smoothness of a compensator vs a straight gear setup.
