General / Re: Oil Filter Operation
Last post by Wookie3011 - Today at 02:33:38 AM
I guess the hope is that if and when something like scuffing in cylinders or detonation happens that the best filtration MIGHT save parts instead of allowing those particles to keep flowing through the system. The tight rope is flow vs protection. There is only so much flow one needs but I want the most protection while meeting the flow requirements. The ease of use and monetary savings with a reusable filter is nice but throw into the equation a Crank, pistons rods pump and that once perceived savings goes out the door pretty quick. Add in pushing these motors to the limit and past their design and my mind starts looking at ways to prevent premature engine failure situations. Bump up the compression=better ways to cool. The more I wrench and push the boundaries those truths you hear alot in here become gospel. There is no free power and everything is truly a trade off.

DTTJGlide, you were so right...
Picked up the Cam chain tensioner today....Holy "Potty mouth"balls! An OEM tensioner is $54... The S&S one is $199 Ffffaaaark! I paid the money, but I was surprised to be paying nearly 4 times the cost of a Harley one. I should have checked beforehand but didn't think it would be so much more.

Thanks
Pauly

Quote from: DTTJGlide on February 10, 2025, 12:44:45 AMS&S gets rich from people who say "why wouldn't I" my stock tensioner showed minimal wear @ 152K miles, all but 18K with a S&S 475 cam. The chain showed a little stretch so I replaced that with a new stock chain, it won't hurt to replace it, but not needed.

Quote from: Hossamania on Yesterday at 12:35:45 AMNo catch can for me. The oil came from the ground, I'm putting it back there.

My tranny leak puts more oil to the ground than does my breather tube.

New Diamond primary chain and rubbing block, 24t solid sprocket, new Alto red fibers and steel plates, new J&P clutch hub 52 needle bearings, Barnett blue springs, lubed the clutch cable and installed a new solenoid gasket since I had a leak there.

Gonna button it up with a new primary cover gasket and 5-8 oz of fresh primary fluid.

Now need to wait a long time for the snow/slush/salt to go away!

I think a stock Harley should make 100,000 miles, and believe they are made to do so.

If you upgrade power output.  A ramp and billet basket only is what I recommend.  HD did a great job w/ their slipper clutch.

That's why TTS is on top of the pile in tuning devices  :SM: . It's the same as collecting vtune data, just lots more of it to collect. You will spend time waiting for the bike to cool down. Once you upload your map and data and then download the new tune don't expect to see the changes because you won't. Very common comment on even the big builds is "it doesn't feel like a hot rod, it's so smooth"

I'm thinking the tubing does take heat well hoping to run it away from anything really hot, have to keep a eye on it, looking for a small wrap for it,when I was a kid had headers on a car and starter wire was close wrapped it in alum foil worked good couldn't see it won't work on bike.

Now I'll have the learning curve of tuning the traction control (torque management). In power vision, there's a table to max it out (turn it off). Thank you all for the replies (help)!

And once you're done you can remove it and put the narrowbands back in.
