Title: New Top End
Post by: mickblues on April 24, 2019, 10:46:01 AM
Hi just had new SS 110 kit put on, heads done by Dave Mackie compression set 10.7.   Im noticing after the bike gets hot it starts feeling sluggish and not as responsive. Coming out first gear is choppy if that would be a correct way to put it.  can someone tell me if its running lean or what would be causing this?

Possible sumping candidate.

As stated maybe dumping, also maybe the tune. When does it run better? Only after it cools off? If sumping it should still have a crank full of oil after cooling off.

runs better I believe when engine is cool

Read the plugs, If they show rich then that could cause it.  If you rode around with the choke pulled out all the time it would act the same, generally speaking.
also torque the intake flange bolts on the heads, you could be going lean as the cylinders grow. It should be done anyways so...

On dyno but tuner hasn't been doing it that long. I am bringing it to a reputable tts tuner in few weeks

I'd take the tips on here, check for stumping, and leave the bike be till you get it tuned. I just posted in another thread today that the ONLY failure I've heard of with the S&S 110" kit came from improper break in and tune.

My 96" with Andrews 48s and PV a base map felt "choppy" on take offs too, and had hot start problems... till it was tuned.

I brought it to HD dealership to get oil change after putting 500 miles on it. I told them to check for sumping and they said sumping doesn't happen with vtwin engines.

I will get it tuned by a reputable guy by me.

You need a new dealer , I screwed up the oil pump o ring on a cam change and sumping is exactly what you are describing your bike is doing

The guy who did the top end build is coming to pick up my bike so he will check everything which is good.  But  yes for future, do not go to dealers when it comes to more advance "Potty mouth" like this.

Hey, yes he just came and picked up my bike.  I gave him a list of things to check.  I also want to make sure my compression was in fact set to 10.7.

Hey man, turned out good. No sumping and yes the builder retuned when I brought it back.  Not sure what he did different but the bike woke up.  Much much more responsive and rips.  Maybe because it broke in more then the retune.  He used PowerVision. No new cam added, still has TW-8-6.  I am curious tho about the TTS Mastertune wondering if I can get even more out of the bike.  Maybe something to look at down the road.

i use the tts tuners as they are flexible and can handle almost anything I throw at the bike.  My only complaint about the TTS is that it does not allow for cycling the abs system.  Would love to be able to do that annually at home vs the dealer.

So I notice when riding for a while and engine gets real hot that when accelerating on take off when i let the clutch out its choppy. The When i turned the bike off and tried restarting it doesn't start. I tried several times. I have to wait for the engine to settle or im thinking cool down then starts up.

Bike performs flawlessly until engine gets super hot then these issues arise.   Any ideas?

Do you mean the bike won't turn over when it's hot or it spins over but won't fire?

It wasn't turning over. I had to let it sit for 20-30 mins before trying again.  I have a video trying to upload but can't

Pistons aren't seizing and just got new top end. Spoke to the tuner said that cranking fuel settings might be to high for the temp. Said to bring back in and he can adjust. Said not uncommon for builds like mine

If you paid to have this built and tuned and then have these kind of issues. You need to find a more competent builder/tuner!!!

Mick it should never not turn over from heat, I'm a bit worried for you to be honest, are you near any of the regular shops on here? someone that knows their stuff needs to have a look before you spend any more money on tuning it.
