inner cam bearing

friend has a 17 m8 wants to change cam + exhaust. 4000 mi. is it necessary to change the inner bearing or not?

I won't state that you have to change the bearing. But it falls into the category as with all HD motors, the OEM bearing is not the best choice based on other bearings that can be used. It's cheap insurance upgrading to a better bearing with twice as many rollers.

OP, here is a comparison that was posted on a forum, that I saved for reference. It is comparing the OEM Ina bearings to the better Koyo bearings. They used to be called Torrington bearings. They are now owned by Koyo, so they are now called Koyo bearings or sometimes Koyo-Torrington bearings.

This compares the TC bearings, but as you see, the TC96 & TC103 use the same B-168 bearing, as the M8 engines..
