Title: 1974 XLCH Sportster Tires
Post by: Maxlee on May 19, 2014, 10:50:34 AM
Does anyone know the original brand of tire that came on the bike?
Would you recommend putting the same brand of tire back on the bike or another brand?  If another brand why?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Service Manual says: "Either Goodyear or Yokohama tires are supplied as original equipment..."

yokomama?
lol ********* I had to go look.*********
I know goodyear was standard.
are you using a Harley manual? (not Clymer or such??)

I dug out my original 1974 Harley manual.
the specs say use the "special" goodyear tires only.
"specially" designed for rim.
no mention of any other.

I used them for 5 years or so.
then switched to Dunlop cause they sponsored my flat track stuff.

now I have some eraser soft tires on.  I don't ride it hiway or anything.
just canyon carving on very rare occasion.

(other 2 Harleys I have got buttons.  getting to old and busted to kick start  stroker)

anything you want to put on it really.
unless you wanting everything authentic and stock.
then find the goodyears

Any tire you get today, will be light years ahead of the tires then.

Just get good tires and you'll be set.

frisco.
well, I  stand corrected.  if it was a 1978.
ya see in 1974 when I bought mine new
and the year the op was asking about the spec tire was goodyear.
your manual was as of 1978  and was 4 years after our bikes were built.
my 1974 manual only specs badyears.

as mail man said, any good modern tire will be fine.
but, if original poster was asking cause restoring to stock for show or something
the originals were not yokos.
