Title: the beast
Post by: garyajaz on February 12, 2015, 06:03:26 PM
been a long while since my valves kissed.
new exhaust guide was a tad tight.

finally finished up other things and its the sportys turn.
been searching for large XLR valves.
exhaust were available  but intake has been hard find.

seems sizes have changed and been discontinued and such.
large intakes are kibblewhite and the over all length is diferent than my ol siftons.
need  cut the intake seats and set up spring pack for the length. also open up exhaust guides .001
i will lap the exhaust valves in.

i finished up the rocker boxes.
polished the covers, cleaned the rocker arms.  i had clearanced the underside of the rocker arms years ago.
but this time apart i noticed witness marks.  i took a cutter and opened them up more.
will clay upon assembly and make sure the arm dosent hit the alum valve collar.
(high lift cams and sifton springs and collars.)

will remove the S&S L carb cause it just dosent like to start.
carb has no accel pump, its idle circut goes from float bowl to TOP of carb and then down to a adjuster then into venturi.
add  big over lap cams and high compression ,   does not get a vacume signal to push fuel up and around.
will lose horse power but putting on a c.v. 40 off my fxdx thats getting a mic 42.
not like i racing it anymore....

then clean up cylinders and install a stock head gaskett.  (lower compression a tad)
next is putting a 20 tranny sprockett on it.  will use bike for in town.
taking off high geared 23 tooth.

maybe back off timing a little.
when heads done will play with compression release holes.
as of now if full on will not start. if full off i cant push down kicker.
have release valve body threaded. got some allen set screws in there.
will drill holes bigger till it starts as easy as i can get it to.

hoping to ride it more than i have in past few years.
knowing wont be able to kick it at all soon.

engine is clayed. plenty of valve to piston cause went from 15 tho head gasket to 45.
valve to valve ok, checked coil bind.
will clearance rocker arm yet more.
heads done and painted.
ignition going in and set today when new batt arrives.
should be vroom vroom next week.
gearing and brakes finished, all looks ride able.
found a round slide mic 38 in my pile.
so now carb choices are the mic or 40mm vacume carb from my dyna.

pix to follow.

"hoping to ride it more"
yeah I hear ya--those damn evos spoiled me 20 yrs ago w/button on the bar--My S&S GAL worked flawlessly since early 70's w/dytch jugs and minus minus cams 77" on my 59 XLCH w/mag but haven't been able to buy parts (pistons) .040 3 1/4". wound up w/75 XLCH jugs .040 over 10.5 comp and can't kick it with my original S&S btm. end. hold on to that GAL I might have to hit ya up fer parts--good luck to ya getting it together and take yer time doin it--thanks for posting

I have 10 days in it going from front to back.
I hear ya on parts.
I have crates of take offs from when I worked on these things all the time.
but the trick engine parts were scarce back in the day.
now... well it took me bout 4 months to get a belt for my primary belt drive.
company been out of business for years.
that kinda stuff.
I do have access to machine shop.
the  time factor goes way up when making parts.

****look into comp releases for heads.****
I could not kick min through anymore with out them.

it fired on 3rd kick (yea)_
then ran like crap. wont idle down.
major intake leak.
I putting longer (stroker plates) manifold back on.
its hole will be larger than carb, but the O-rings will work.

3rd kick?? Impressive!! Easy fix for the i/t leak too...

Gary - that rear chain tensioner you got on there - store bought or built??
Think I'm gonna need one for a drag evo xl I'm building....

home built, I started with a skate board wheel.
would have made it prettier, but when exhaust on its covered.
needed the thing after I made the rear frame section and longer shocks/travel.
forks been stiffened up a lot and also sit higher.

or you could buy one from a dirt bike.

Who dual plugged the Heads? Looks like the right side holes are smaller( 12mm) and set in at a different angle than a set I just had done. Also what Ign.  are you using? As I have a lot of spare parts( harness. pickups, coils, etc. I'm just going to use a 1200S setup on my Ironhead. Very nice bike.

thanks,
with the shop and some help set up from a friend
we did the heads.
those are compression releases.
I can  not kick it at all without them.  jump on lever and just stand there in mid air.

have the c.v. on it for this week testing.
will put the 42 mic on it just cause last time for easy starting I put cv on and it sure lost h.p.
the 42 works well on my 88 incher. just had to take off non acell pump S&S.
would like a dual carb mic (sudco?) manifold just for the look.

ignition....chevy  blue streak points and cond.
stock batt points coil.

I tried 2 complete different sets of electronic ignition systems.
would not start on either of them
just kicks over too slow to produce spark.

Very nice setup, as I'm to old  to kickstart one any more my will be E start. Had a twin 29mm mic. carb set on my first shovel.
Have just always went to S&S carbs,  really loved the MGAL on my 114 gas bike, Also love the color.
