I thought it was the 255! But could it have been the 253?

I need educated then Ridgid! That cam has an intake closing of 53. How does this work? Done Pistons from the factory?   that's an late closing for a stock Cam isn't it?  :nix:

Flat top with a large combustion chamber, compression was not that high.

95 cc chamber , the 253 cams, .530" lift in. and ex., .045" head gasket, makes that bike a slug.
Use a cam with an early closing intake. Clip .050" off the heads, and a .030" head gasket and you'll be good to go.

I believe they left the compression low, and used a late close cam, to avoid EPA (and starter) issues.
Like John says,  a small head cut combined with a better cam and Bobs your uncle.
