I found a replacement 12v years ago for my 1956 that fit the horseshoe tank.
IIRC it was shorter than the 6v but fit the hole.
I ran it for awhile but changed it all back to stock 6v when I restored the bike.
Try a google search and you'll probably find one.

One of these. May need some foam blocks underneath to raise it up for cable connection.
