General / Shimming 39mm Fork Bushings
Last post by GLFLSTCI02 - April 29, 2024, 03:26:30 AM
Has anyone out there shimmed the play out of their fork lowers? I replaced the bushings in my forks this winter with new ones and although the same brand as the previous ones these have much more play, to the point where I have a clunk over bumps and it actually chattered dragging the brake going slow in traffic downhill to a stop sign.
I have a set of 12" feeler gauges 1/2" wide on the way for shim stock along with new bushings and seals so there is no question whether or not I am going to give it a try, but I would like to hear from anyone who has actually done it. I am particularly interested in what approach they took on the top (outside) bushing.
Anyone have any experience with this that could give me a few pointers?

TIA,
Gene

Iron Head / XLH gear selection issues
Last post by Suzook12 - April 29, 2024, 01:06:37 AM
Hi Guys, I have an ironhead XLH 75, the first year left foot shift model with the 10 mile long pedal......
It was struggling to find 2nd gear and beyond while running/riding, could just get all the gears carefully moving pedal by hand. Having made sure all the linkages were tight, went on to inspect the shaft..... This is what I found......

I'd be tempted to vent the primary and put a belt back in there  :SM:

If it were me I'd go back to a faithful chain.
