Title: Front wheel wobble..... Fork brace for 41mm touring suspension?
Post by: shindig on November 17, 2020, 09:03:32 AM
I am trying to stiffen up my front suspension.  I have a 21inch wheel and at times when you hit a big pothole it gets a bit wobbly.  Any recommendations for a fork brace for 41mm touring front forks?  I have a 2005 Road Glide but I am assuming anything from like '00-'13 should be good correct?  Any other suggestion for a cure? Thanks.

I hunted high and low for a fork brace for my 1999 Road Glide - unobtainable!
In the end I contacted Custom Cycle Engineering and they made me one.
Obviously the cow bells have to go!

You could get a fork brace for a Wide Glide but you have to fit it 'backwards' which is not deal.

THEN there is that truly vile top triple tree design.
You cure that by fitting this kit from Custom Cycle Engineering:-

The Tour Trac Dressers Trees.
I am part way through fitting one to my bike.

And that is as good as it gets until you fit Ohlins Upside down forks.

The fenders of baggers are pretty stout in a torsion aspect. but you could have someone use their metal brake to bend an arch to fit inside a stock fender. BUT! you maybe having some neck bearing adjustment issues going on. No offence, but a 21" on a bagger probably wasn't meant to be by the engineers.

:agree:  Those are long spokes and long spokes allow more flex.

Thank you.  It is a performance machine billet aluminum wheel.

Tell me it is the sensible 'for a bagger' 130/60 x 21 or similar...

As for the fender - believe me, the fork brace is noticeably better!

"It costs how much???!!!" Is the only thing between me and Ohlins USD forks.
If you can afford it, that IS your best and first choice.

I have found that if front end wobbles when hitting pothole not to hit pothole. Ride a rigid frame for a few years you will learn to miss the potholes.

I found this.  It is a fairly new product.  49mm trees to fit 13 and below frames....

Nice find!
If I ever bend my 41mm forks I might consider that!
Now, look at that slot cut for the fork tube clamp. That is the quick'n'cheap way of doing it. Ducati and everybody else does that.

Old Triumph forks AND I am pleased to say the CCE top clamp do it properly with a slit going in from the hole for the fork tube. Only needs a single bolt, costs more to make of course.

Like Jeff said the fender is a pseudo fork brace.

Is the bike lowered?  What does it have in the forks for suspension?  Spring rate/travel/damping?

Thanks all.  I am pretty sure it is the neck bearings.  Will be doing a complete front end change with the geezer glide triple trees.  May be a minute but I will keep everyone posted with the results.
