Great looking job
If it runs as good as it looks (and I bet it does) he should be all smiles. :bike:

Boy does that bring back memories.
I picked one up off the showroom floor. I still have it but it no longer looks like that.
Nice bike any other pics?
Hi to all from Paris France
This is my "new" xlh 1965 ......still hard to kick start ....but I don't give up
Bobby, that is one clean looking bike!
76 XLH Stroker
Here's my '74.
She's got a Cycle Electric generator, Tech Cycle starter, S&S Shorty E carb, Hydroclutch 7184 conversion, Lyle Landstrom sand-cast finned air cleaner cover & all kinds of brass pieces (pegs, risers, grips, brake & shift linkages, gauge pod, etc.) machined by yours truly as my first go at an ancient Bridgeport down on the Miami River at a yatch-rebuilding joint..
I found an old MPD finned primary cover on eGay & a twisted sissy bar from Bill's Custom Cycles in PA.
Nicky Bootz relocated the filler & petcock so that I could Frisco-mount a 3.5-gallon peanut tank using a cut-up EZ Bob mount.
The battery box mounted behind the primary with the oil filter above it was my own design --- it keeps the dino-fluid in that big-assed filter cool & detaches in about a minute by swinging away & giving full accesss to the battery.
The seat, solidly-mounted is good for a 500 or 600-mile day due to curvature of the homemade pan being correct & the ergonomics between it, the forwards & apehangers being spot-on.

Pretty cool bike, Ivan!
Thanks, Hossamania ---- I really appreciate the kind words.
It started out as a frame with two wheels & 16 milk crates full of greasy, mostly-iffy parts in 1992.
I had to learn EVERYTHING from scratch using just my factory service manual, the gearjead mentality I inherited from my Dad & my own imagination.
She was fickle at first, mostly electrical issues, until I made up my own wiring harness with cloth-covered wire soldered to insulated connectors & ran it inside the frame.
I haven't had an issue since. :chop: :chop: :chop:
72 Iron head cases, Hilborn Injected, High Gear, Nitromethane
WOW
I am humbled
73 XLH done up with modern stuff. 2006 tins. 2008 39 mm front end, 60 spoke wheels, 1200 stroked engine, Dual plugged heads, Andrews gears. Disk brakes fore and aft. Ultima ignition and carb.
ricochet
Well look at that pretty one!
Not bad for a compilation of Ebay stuff. No OEM stock machine was harmed in the making of this ride.
That's my disclaimer for the purist.
Still amazes me the amount of Ironhead stuff on Ebay that is clearly from several outfits parting out bikes. Lately I see quite a bit of heavily oxidized parts. I'm assuming from underwater salvage!
ricochet
You can't sell a nice Ironhead for a profit.
You can double your money (or better) parting it out on Ebay.
ricochet, your pipes reminded me of an experience when I was on my way to Laconia, NH. back around 1985. I stopped in a parking lot in Manchester, NH. and a group of Harleys pulled in, one had pipes turned down like that and I could feel the ground shake every time it fired a cylinder at idle. Impressive!
Guys used to used goose neck pipes like that because a cop could not stick a baton in them to see if there were baffles.
I had some crafty work on the rear pipe to get it to fit and look the way I wanted it. Because it's 2 in. OD it was interfering with the oil tank and/or the starter. In order to make clearance a strategically placed dimple solved that problem but the pipe hung a bit low pointing at the ground. I made protective sleaves out of PVC pipe backed up with steel and with the pipe secure in a vice used more PVC and pipe to bend it just a skosh.
ricochet
then came Bronson
Here's my ongoing project. 72 frame, 79 motor trying to convert it to kick & electric. I'm here to try and gain some knowledge and get it finished!
Looks like a fun project. So I see a starter hanging off of it, and also the kicker lever. What part of "trying" are you still trying to do?
cheers,
JW
Yes it all looks good on this side but the other side is just a big gaping hole where the primary should be.
Sent the bike into a shop to drill and rivet the ratchet plate on to the back of the clutch drum an re-assemble. They sent it back to me and claimed I need a longer mainshaft because it wouldn't bolt back up and line up with the front sprocket. Now I've found out I need a '78 or older clutch drum and it should bolt up fine. Once I find one and bolt it up I'll know for sure.
My next project. 1978 xlcr frame, Sputhe cases, 4.25 stroke, ex drag engine. I found it at an estate sale, went to find tools etc., got carried away.

OK, so my daughter is a budding photographer, and has just gotten a very nice new camera, so what the heck. Took some pics of my Sporty. Is a 1978 XLH that's been "bobbed".

Love this bike. The FAT front tire looks great on there !
My '77 after a Race a couple years ago..that is my Youngest, with a friend and BFB.. Yes he won his first Race on the Same Bike I won my First race on...
Pres, no pic attached.
I think I fixed it....
I bought this from the daughter of the ling time St Paul MN dealer Howard Belmont. It was "pickled" by dealer mechanics. I saw it as an investment but may someday put it back on the road.
Now that's a beauty, Brian! Would love be to see it on the road, a hit wherever it goes. They were not loved when they came out, and now a pure classic.
Congratulations!
I sure second that! Very cool, always one of my favorite Sportsters. Funny how at the time, XLCR and XR1000 were the bastard step-children of the HD world, now they're like royalty. Indeed get that beaut on the road. Or sell it to me and I will.

Super clean! An inspiration...
Originals I believe. I have an aftermarket system that came with the bike.
I have it sitting under a sheet up at the garage at the lake.
I bought it as an investment, not as a rider. I watched them at Mecum go for close to $20K a couple years ago and lately one went on fleabay for a little under $10K. Tires are original and all checked so there would be some work to ride it but who knows?
Thank you for the compliments BTW!
Congratulation nice looking bike.ride it.
The ones JW 113 pictures are the ones I have and remember, plus the exhaust was more satin The one one the bike looks to shiny. Plus you can check and see if it has the EPA numbers stamp in them and for what year. Still a nice looking bike.
A work in progress; should be riding within a week.
Thanks for all the help here
