A friend of mine bought a 05 Road King ex Cop bike and he is only getting 32-33 mpg. His engine light flickers at low speed and it has about 16,000 iles on it. The worst mileage I have had on my 05 Ultra is about 37 mpg, at 85 to 90, going against the wind, with two up and 26g andrews cams. His bike is bone stock. Whats up with that? Thanks for any help with this, its his first H-D and he can't understand why my bike gets better mileage.
Also, he dosen't hot rod the bike at all. Is 33 mpg the best this bike will get? Will a stage 1 make that much difference?

I've got an '04 RK excop. It averages around 38 mpg. It's got a Screamin' Eagle Stage ! kit on it otherwise it's stock. I ride 65-70 on the highway.

There are sensors than, if gone bad, will kill fuel mileage, ie: cyl head temp, intake air temp, and M.A.P..
Either the EFI has been messed with or there is a sensor bad....unless of course there are other undisclosed symptoms that will cause poor mileage such as sumping, low tire pressure, etc.

Fuel pressure may be bad.........too high due to a defective Fuel Pressure Regulator. Check the fuel pressure.
If it's a cop bike '05, it's probably got a bigger motor 95" or possibl yeven a 103", bigger motors usually get less milage.
05's were still 88's from the factory.
So today I go on a short test ride with my friend with the 05 RK ex cop bike and I noticed that he just turned the key and hit the Start button. I told him that in the Owners Manual it says to wait until the engine light goes out then start. So he did that that and after a 65miles ride we file up again and now he is getting 39.5 mpg to my 38.9 mpg. Either he was doing his math wrong or the way he was starting it was wrong. WTF

Can you imagine a cop by the side of the road as a speeder whips by at say 100mph. The cop has to wait for the light to go out. The speeder would be in the next county by the time the cop got his bike rolling.
Just kidding but that is exactly what happened in 1996 when the police received their FLHP-I owners manual that stated to let the engine light go out before starting. The MOCO promply sent out a service bulletin to all dealers to explain to the police as well as any customer who asked, waiting for the light was not required.
