I was out riding the other day and got off the highway and my bike was idleing at 1500 rpm's. Rode some back roads for a while, and the problem continued. I was kinda freaking out cause I didnt want to take it back to the dealer to check it out since I had it tuned at RC. I dont want the dealer to get hold of my little black box again. I stopped for lunch and when I started her up the problem seemed to go away. What would cause this intermittent problem. Is there anything I can do if it does it again. TIA
If it's an EFI bike I would look at the idle set screw. My '07 RG did that with me rolling down the Interstate at 70mph kicked off the cruise and I was still going 70mph. Long story short the screw was not loctited in place and it turned in while I was cruising down the HWY. Also look to see if the butterfly is in good shape I've heard that the throttle shaft can break and the butterfly binds in the bore holding the throttle slightly open.
First of all I’ll check for any obstruction on the IAC air passage. Just take the AF off and cycle the ignition kill switch on and off, while you spray some carb cleaner on the passage.
Other source could be a malfunctioning TPS. Employing SEST, SERT, TTS and many other applications you can contrast actual throttle position vs. what the sensor is reading. If at idle it shows something different from 0%, something is wrong with the sensor, and once it starts to give troubles, although is possible to tamper it a little for a temporal fix IMHO is better to change it at once.

When my 08 throttle by wire bike does this I have to cycle the ignition switch several times.
They say it is caused by shutting bike down with the throttle off the zero position.
Its an 09 so its got the dbw system. Ill try to cycle the ignition a few times if it does it again. I heard the bike will do this sometimes if you dont use the ignition switch to shut it off, and always use the thumb kill switch. is this true? I always try to use the ignition instead of the thumb kill switch. Thanks for the input.
I was also told to use the ignition swt to turn it off instead of the kill swt.
I'm a creature of habit and want to keep the habit of using the kill swt.
I had a airleak on my 2 piece delphi throttlebody, didn't find it until I unbolted the backing plate from the heads, that was causing my idle to go high. Not sure thats your problem but I figure any info can always help.
08 and later touring have an electronic throttle control, and it resets every time the key is turned off/on- so, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) "0" is wherever the grip happens to be, when ignition is switched on. If your hand is on the grip at key off or key on, it will reset the "0" position to something other than true "0". Simple solution? I keep my paws off the grip when turning the key on, and leave the run/stop switch set to run.

Had the same problem with my 08 Ultra TBW. Watched the SM at the dealer hold the right turn signal switch down and cycle the ign for a full cycle until the check engine light went off. Turned off the ign. sw and then restarted and the problem went away.
There is a service bulliten out and a dealer download to correct this issue. Mine seems to do it when it's humid or damp out. I also learned to keep my hand off the throttle when starting and shutting the bike off. I never use the kill switch, always been told it's for an emergency so old habbits never seem to die. Also if you learm to use your right hand to turn the switch then it won't be on the grip. Just a thought and what I did to overcome the problem. Spidey.
