Title: solvent that'll cut Hylomar ?
Post by: nomadbkr on October 21, 2011, 10:29:38 AM
.. yea ... that hylomar universal blue is tuff stuff ..
.. seals up real good ... stopped a stubborn rocker box leak that nuthin else would ..
.. but now that my shovelhead mill is totally leak free, I gotta tear into it again ... lol ..
... the stuff a real bich to remove ..
.. brake kleen doesn't seem to touch it and it's suppose to stand up to about anything ..
.. the "hylomar gasket remover" and electro-sol" solvents are all I can find online that's suppose to work on the stuff, but it's a mail order thing and rather high priced ..
..
... does anyone know of an "off the rack" hardware store or auto parts store gasket removing solvent that'll cut Hylomar Universal Blue ??

.. suggestions ? .. comments ??

thanks,
nomad

Did you try acetone or laquer thinner? Those are some strong solvents. One or the other usually cuts through anything I've used it on.

Haven't personally used it on Hylomar but MEK works well on many things.

MEK works.  Might have to get a rag moist and let it sit on the part a second, but it will soften it up.  It's pretty nasty stuff so be cautious of that.

Are you using the good Brakleen or the enviromental-friendly stuff? I use hylomar all the time and the good brakleen cleans it right up.

Try some of your wifes nail polish remover, main ingrediant is acetone. If it works run down to the hardware store and buy a can of it. If it's really hard in coming off you may want to try mineral spirits to soften it up first.

Acetone will dissolve any old Hylomar, its what its made with. Been using Hylomar for 30yrs on machinery Acetone is the only way to go, cheap and easy, but nasty stuff .  Use in a well ventilated room with rubber gloves, wet a rag and rub.  Bob
