The harley rebuild program, wether it was done in house as before or by S&S as it is done now, has always been a very good deal. Local indies can rebuild an engine for a very competitive price, but now when the exterior finish is brought into play.

As part of the harley program, the engine being remanufactured could be pitted raw aluminum and bad chrome and yet the remanufactured engine will have the same finish as a new engine. New powdercoat and chrome, usually the chrome stuff is new. The local indi cannot compete with that.

That warrantee is not worth the cost of paying the dealership rate to pull and reinstall the engine. The risk of the new engine having a problem is not worth the exceptionally high fees the dealership charges.

It is funny how the dealership in town will not work on an evo or even a carb'd bike, claim they don't have anyone trained and certified to work on the evo. But yet they are somehow able to remove and install an evo engine and offer warranty work on it.

Screw the dealership. Pull the engine yourself, drop it at the dealer for remanufacturing, reinstall it yourself, save a bundle. Be sure to flush the oil tank and oil lines while the engine is at S&S getting rebuilt.

Is it about 7hrs labor total to have the engine removed & repalced? Just curious  :nix:

Your right turboprop, it is funny when times are good or when they where very good the dealership could call the shots.
"We only fix Harley Davidson motorcycles" this type of attitude is pure Bravo Seirra.
Anyways, to the OP, last summer I thought I blew my 02 Ultra up and called around for the reman process.
Mt.Baker Harley Davidson offered me the reman service for $3800.00 iirc. remove and install my new engine, I had to pay for fluids and the primary gaskets, they would meet me at the border with a trailer to haul it down to their shop.
Yup, it is expensive no two ways about it. But, locally the reman option was twice the price I had from south of the border.
There is also a few deals on the dealerships web pages from time to time, new Evo engines in the 3 grand hood but you need to do the install, etc.
Tis your hard earned money and I have offered a few ideas to ponder or not?
Hope your riding pdq.
Rob

With the Harley reman, isn't the dealer required to R&R the motor?

No, but the catch is no warranty unless the dealer R&Rs the motor. Not a big deal to me.

I have some experience with this as a couple years ago I pieced together a complete evo engine, from mine and my buddies junk. There was no way this engine could have run, I think every threaded hole was stripped, primary lip broken off the case, rods bent, valves from the junk box, cylinders with bent fins, not even sure if there were rings in it. I opted for the black and chrome. Not sure if any of my parts came back with the new engine as it looked like a brand new engine. It is now sitting behind the bar in my man room.

The dealer was none too happy with me, kept pushing the no warranty thing. In the end he was just pissed that he didn't get paid, maybe a little for being a pass through for harley. But no labor to remove and reinstall.

Yikes!  After seeing that, they probably didn't put rings in it either.
If so, they might have been from their junk box.   :potstir:

No, not at all. The engine came back without any issues. Gorgeous, very little leak down. Collecting up parts for another one. Between my buddies and me we all need something. I have a junk case and cylinders, a buddy has some junk heads, another has some lifter blocks, lifters and covers he would like to get freshened up. Will put it all together, probably won't even have gaskets in it, but it will be complete and Harley will remanufacture it. When it comes back we will canabulize it, everyone will get their parts back that they put in.
