Title: Edelbrock Dual Quicksilver Carb
Post by: SoftailDave on September 07, 2012, 08:39:02 AM
Has anyone here installed one of these on their Evo? They look pretty cool but do they work well or just all show and no go?

A real tuning challenge. It's bad enough to try and get 1 of these carbs working satisfactorily much less 2 of those buggers hung off a long intake manifold.
Vibration frequencies play hell with float needles and seats causing overflow and expected variable AFR.

I have a buddy that has a set hanging off his TX chopper with an S&S 111.  They look good and run fine. He has 10,000 miles on the set up.

I ran a set for more than 10 years. I took them off about a year ago. The ones I ran had no accelerator pumps so they were hard to tune but I think the newer versions have pumps. Once I jetted mine to run fairly rich they were fine. I now run a Mikuni which has much better throttle response than the non-accelerator pump QS's, but sure doesn't look as cool!  :smiled:

I had the QS setup on an 80" evo.  Once tuned up, it was about OK.  Changed for a Mik 42 and found out what I was missing.  Gave the QS away to somebody who a few years ago posted they were looking for a challenge. lol.  I think I even paid postage to be sure it did not come back!  :hyst:

In fairness, there are worse carbs out there.................

When those carbs first came out, the magazines all gave them rave reviews, but it's sure hard to find many real world riders who have much good to say about them.  They sound great on paper, but then Twin Cams do, too.

I agree.
We tossed the towel in, on those years ago.

TheSwede, are you able to tell us more about your setup?

Hi Evo160K Thank you for interest,,

The carbs is HS 40..on an old Sputhe manifold
orginally enteded for Lectron carbs,,
indivdually jetted,, the only thing that is mutual  is the slide axle
I built the setup about 20 years ago..
each carbs have 145 main jet

I have 2 sets of the duals on evo's, and a single on a shovel. I had sent them all back to Edelbrock, after complaining to their tech staff that they were junk! They returned them to me with accelerator pumps. On the dual set-up, they only have one of the carbs with a pump. I'm here to say... much better!! Not great.... but way better! Got them all tuned in (not to bad to do) and since they look so good, I have kept them. Knowing what I know now... would never spend the cabbage to buy a new set!!  They do look bad ass though!   :chop:

Yo, JohnnyKool, got a bigger pic of that bike?  My old eyes can't make out much from the avatar and what I see from the carb pic makes me want to see the whole bike.

KTM (Austrian dirt bike mfg), used the QS's, (36 and 38mm) on their '97 and '98 400 and 620 4 stroke singles because that's the onlt carb they could get at the time to meet USA smog laws. I suspect the ones used on the H-D's are similar in that they do not have a standard PJ and MJ, but just operates off the adjustable needle. They originally came out w/o and accel pump and it was vented internally. In stock form, they just didn't run real well and were difficult to start. Edlebrock offered a accel pump and an external vent upgrade and this helped them quite a bit. I spent days working with these carbs on three different KTM 620's and could only get them to run reasonably well. With only the AP and the needle to work with, it seemed you could get it to run pretty good in the low to midrange, then it would fall on it's face on top, or you could get it to run reasonable well in the mid to top, and it wouldn't run well on the bottom. I had three different needles to work with too. Most everyone who had one on their bike replaced it with a Mik BST of the Keihin FCR and the bikes ran 100% better. Maybe the new ones can be made to run well, but I think the design of the carb compromises it to some degree compared to other carbs out there. I've still got three of them in the garage I use for paperweights.

You've got some skills, son.  That bike makes me wish my back was 20 years younger.  The yellow one ain't bad either.
Saw  your shovel pics over on the other board.  I thought I was wierd to want a pair of FLT's,  but two identical?  Good for you.

Nice pair 'o black beauties!! ...  Ol' saying of mine... "give me two of them"?!?!?  not sure how long ago or why I say it!?! And... while with a name like Old Crow... you may have me beat, but probably not by much! Lets just say I been ridin and wrenchin' for about 35 years...yep, in my mid fifties(which now seems middle age to me!). And the yellow bike... (actually some kind of orange-y color that I mixed up), I started building about 13 years ago (pre-broken-neck / due to a women not watching where she was going, crashin into my cage!! Hung in traction for 2 years waiting for surgery which failed!! now head held on by a plate... with 2 stripped screws out of 5!!! What ... no Heli-coils back then???!!)) So it's almost an antique already, and not even finished! Still need to put the blower on (been sittin' on the table next to the bike, and hasn't jumped on yet!! and... if it blown... it must suck!!), and have to fab a seat! Takes about a year for each process, so should be done in another .... ohhh... 5 years or so!!!!! Lucky I can still ride  and wrench I guess(although my rides on that hardtail are from bar-to-bar)!!! In between wrenchin', I've have 4 kids to raise!!! (3 are  purdy girls!!!! 20 though teens ... aaarrrggghhhh!!!(Cruel paybacks I guess!!)). Wife took over the 'man' part, and works... while I stay home and grow man-boobs and put on 'winter fat'! Keep waiting for my son of 11 years to pick-up biken, so he can finish'em up! He's into sports though (not a bad thing, I just was a motorhead at 7). Not to mention 2 hundred other projects I've started!! All in good time I guess! So yeah... send me back 20 years ago!!!  :chop:

I know I'm probably in for a world of pain but I ended up buying these carbs. They are the Edelbrock Quiksilver II's with the accelerator pump. Couldn't resist they look so sexy! Hope to install them in about a month or two (still to cold up here in Canada). They came with everything including cables, will need two new carb seals and they recommend replacing the vacuum fuel petcock with a non vacuum one. They were only $400 so if I don't like them they will be off to ebay.

We seen those here on our dyno years ago, on 80" configurations.
Didn't make any more power than a 42 Mikuni, or S&S E, on the same/same build.
If those are installed on a larger powerplant, they'll peel the power right off it.
Local client couldn't bust 100 hp on his S&S 113"/Wood 9F, with those.
Just sayin'.

Hi Scott!
My bike is basically stock with an Andrews cam. I got a really good deal on the carb set so I'm going to give it a try. I don't have any expectation for improved performance and will be happy with it performing as well as the stock CV carb. I'm mainly installing it for looks. I am used to tinkering with carbs and I have the Edelbrock manual on setting up these carbs so I'm hopeful I can dial it in to some sort of reliable performance. If not I guess I will mount it on the wall in the garage as a piece of art and go back to my original carb system. :bike:

Dave,  don't worry about it.  A lot of us on here are tinkerers.  Heck, I'd like to tinker with a Hypercharger on my shovel, but I'm looking for a not-so-pretty one I can sandblast and paint flat black.

And before anyone says anything, I know it won't add power, I'm like Dave and his carb...I just like the look, and I think flat black would go nice with my flat black exhaust.

Had a couple flat-black Shovels in the day.
Folks thought they were some clapped-out pile-o-chit, until that 4 3/4" engine would fire up. :hyst:
One was a 92"er, and the other was 98".

Ain't nothin' sounds like a stroked Shovel with drag pipes.
Puts a smile on my face and a chubby in my pants every time I fire her up.

65* today and the mud on my driveway is still too soft to get the bike out...GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Good to know! I may just buy some parts in case I need them in the future before they are all gone. I instaledl the carb and manifold on the bike last week and took it for a short spin. Was rough for the first 5 minutes then smoothed out. Just have to adjust the idle as it is too high. May be selling this setup as I found a brand new unused one.

OK so I have been running my Edelbrock Dual Quicksilver II Carbs for two months. Thought I would give you my opinion on them. I did have tuning problems until I downloaded the instructions from the internet. These carburetor adjustments are backwards  :wtf: which may have been the source of frustration by others that have tried to tune these carbs. To lean these carbs instead of turning the adjustment clockwise you turn the adjustment counter clockwise .  Once I figured this out I was able to tune the carburetor to my satisfaction. So far so good I feel it is a good improvement over the stock CV carb.

Those screws are idle air adjustment. Not for tuning anything but idle and off idle running.
Screw them in to decrease air (richer) screw them out for more air (leaner)
Glad to hear it's running so well,
Bob
