Title: Ok guys, build me the perfect flash tuner
Post by: BVHOG on July 26, 2014, 07:46:15 AM
So for the tuners out there, what would be your perfect flash tuner and what would it include, what couldnt' you live without and what have you seen that you absolutely don't like. No need to even bring up present product name brands.

1.  A device that would allow me to read NB and WB at the same time.
2.  Live tuning for fuel and spark.
3.  Since we are talking perfect:  A tuner that would give you crank angle in degrees and a resolution of 720.  Of coarse this tuner would also need to come with pressure transducers.

That would be nice, and fast!

Would have to have some small safety in it to keep from accidentally adding 10 degrees at WOT, like RPM's under 1,500 to make the adjustment, then pull again.

1500?  How would I live tune 3250?

I'm saying make the change, but the motor has to drop RPM to make the change, so no accidental click of the mouse at high RPM can occur. Then continue without stopping the motor to reflash.

Not worried about the safety.   Having to drop the rpm defeats my reason for wanting live tuning. Do you have a tq cell on your dyno?  If not, use brake percentage.  Plug in a piggy back like a PCIII, hold 3250, 20%, add 10% fuel. Did you percent of brake go up or down?  Did the exhaust note change?  Now add more.  What happened?  On to timing.  Add timing......... All while holding 3250.

This is the beauty of live tuning.

Control of more parameters in the ecm.  Cranking spark, injector timing.  How about the eck being able to figure out best spark by itself by using the ion q voltage for MBT or live readout for voltage at only the crank tooth needed.   Live adjustments would be lovely also.  Adjusting knock sensitivity would be nice also with the 617 cals.

How about automated tuning, at least for the throttle-by-wire bikes. I envision a system where the dyno operator merely straps the bike in, plugs something into the bike, starts a program on the dyno and then steps back to let the computer control the bike and the dyno. Completely automated, all tables, all settings.

As mentioned by others, live adjustment (timing and fuel) would be great.

The dual sensors (wide and narrow bands) would be sort of neat if it was done right. Not just being able to see them on the same screen, but able to choose which sensor to use in various sections of the map, i.e: narrow bands for the cruise area (where they work best at) and wide bands for other areas of the map.

For the racers, it would be great to be able to connect a dongle to the ECM, download the info from the last run, and then take that dongle and plug into a computer to read, make adjustments and reload. Sort of how a Racepack functions, but for a Harley ECM. The dongle should be able to download all the information and be able to load a new map, without being connected to a computer.

Able to run on Mac OS.

Remote control and monitoring via WiFi or GSM. A wireless module would be plugged into the ECM. Combined with live tuning, lots of possibilities there.

Pretty sure that you know I don't have a nice Dynojet tuning cell, rather a simple Dayton dyno that I have access to occasionally. Thus the reason I speculate on what would be helpful in my application, and is not necessarily exactly as you would have use for the tools.

I didn't know what you have or have access to.   I know less of your dyno.  Just trying to explain why I don't want a limit with anything.  Open it up. Let me pick  break point of rpm vs my rpm points. ECM knows crank position. Why won't they show it.

My other want is to have Mr Rogers own the company.  Who doesn't like that hard charger?

TTS with tuning changes on the fly would be nice. Maybe that's what V3 will do for us????  :nix:

A micro processor much like a power commander 3/5 . Used just for tuning with a speed density flash tuner . Build the map on the fly . When your done you flash it to the ECM .
Trying to use a alpha N processor and converting the data to speed density just isn't accurate enough .
We all know the current ECM isn't going to allow live tuning , so we need a processor that aligns with the current calibration / ECM .
It's doable and not just a pipe dream .

We need another color of dongle. Maybe a red, white and blue  :smiled:

Access to the decell injector shut off rpm would be nice also.  Rob from Robs dyno said that you could have the bike run through a PC and act as the ecm and possibly make live changes and then just transfer the data into the stock ecm.  That would be cool.

Better yet, forget the flash tuner.. Go to a like closed loop Alpha N system like Tmax.. Your issues with the flash tuners will be over..  :teeth:

They make more money.. Instead of spending 6 hours to tune a bike it only takes 1 or 2.. Flat raters will get fat..

but then you spend the other 5 hrs on the phone with them ,learning them how to reflash a map when there tune goes to chit .

If I remember correctly tmax is still kinda considered a flash tuner.  I'm still not a huge fan of alpha n setups and the Delphi ecm has had "wave" technology since 2006.

Apparently everyone wants a Megasquirt MS3Pro tweaked so that it can run the dash.

If MegaSquirt would offer a a plug-and-play package for Harley they could take away a sizable portion of market share from the legacy systems that are currently on the market.

Speaking of mega squirt , anybody out there running it?
