Title: Looking for a comfortable Softail Seat
Post by: JamLazyAss on February 29, 2016, 01:16:15 PM
I'm looking for some suggestions.
I have a 99 Softail Standard. The stock seat is ok for around town at best.
What do you guys have or know of that will still look good, yet be comfortable enough to ride a few hundred miles or more in a day?  :soda:

I had a Mustang seat on my 96 FXSTSB, to this day it was the most comfortable seat I ever sat on. I could sit longer on that bike than my 09 Ultra.

:agree: I need to replace mine too. After 2-1/2 hours riding Saturday, I was sadly happy to get off the bike for gas. And just as happy to get back on after a couple minutes for the butt-sting to go away.

I've been looking at the Mustang Vintage Solo. I just really wish there was a way to try sitting on one before buying. I have a bad vertebrae in my lower back that pinches a nerve and causes numbness below the waist. I have to adjust my sitting position every few minutes now, and it's kinda annoying.

I am happy with a  Mustang on my Deuce.

Sadly for me my a$$ is very particular. If you can afford the breakin time (2500 miles in my case) the Corbin works well on my Softail. Unlike Mustang the Corbin fit with my passenger chair so only one seat need be purchased.

I actually had my stock seat reworked by John Longo. Money well spent.

I put a Mustang touring seat on my Fatboy a couple of years back and really like it.  The wife likes the passenger pillion as well.  Long rides are a world of difference in comfort with the Mustang vs the stock.

I had Allen work over a Stock Fatty Seat for me years ago, he was a pleasure to deal with especially as I bought the seat in the US had the seller send it to MCC and then they ship it to me in Brisbane.  A dick around but Allen was good with it.  The seat was good but I continued to look around, bought a Mustang from Kurt (HTT) in Colorado and then another Mustang I found locally in Brisbane.

I use all 3 seats depending on what I'm doing, but the long distance comfort goes to the Mustang.  I'l post some pix and P/Ns of what I have.

Mean City Cycles

6 shooter Mustang used to have  a return / exchange program if you bought the set directly from them. I heard rumor Mustang is now owned by some conglomerate. Anyone know ?  :nix:

I have used a Mustang in the past with great success. I will, tho inform you, it will require a breakin period before its at its best. Day after day comfort after that!
My 01 Dyna sports a solo Corbin. The previous HD solo was good for 200miles, then painful for every added mile. The Corbin is good for 500-600 mile days easy with no discomfort at all. It been on the bike for over 10 years now, still looks good and the best $$ I ever spent for ANY item for my ride. fwiw Buffalo

I have nothing against a Mustang seat, I have had them and like them.

What I like also about Allen at Mean City Cycles, he'll adjust you back, forward, down, up as you require. You get a more personally tailored fit in my opinion.

I've used MCC too.  I couldn't stand the stock seat on my 09 Ultra but MCC would not work on 09s.  I sent them a reduced reach seat to modify and they did a great job.  It still wasn't what I was looking for so I bought JayCee's seat from his 12 Ultra.  I was going to send it to MCC but once I replaced the cover and tried it I think it's a keeper.  Thanks for breaking in the seat for me JayCee. :teeth:

He worked on my '08 seat and my '09 seat. The '08 seat was two years ago, the '09 last fall.     :nix:

Aside from that, I've had several other seats doe there in the past.

I agree 100%.

When I had a Heritage I tried about 10 different seats on it.

The Mustang solo is pretty good, but the Corbin beat it hands down after an extended break-in period.

Alright, how about a riding position comparison? Ride height, more forward or rearward?

Any significant changes from stock to a mustang, corbin, etc.?

Thanks in advance

According to their website, any returns are subject to a restocking fee.....20%

That's at least $40 per test.

I am in the same predicament as the OP.

Has anyone tried the Harley Signature series seat which includes the rider backrest?

I got the mustang royal for my Fatboy. The wife loves it I hate it. Moved me forward a ton and is hard.  I had my stock seat modified with a gel pad. I love it and wife has to tough it out.  Mustang collecting dust in basement.

6 shooter , under the Mustang website support tab , returns tab you have 10 days to return a seat and exchange for a similar or greater value seat without being subject to 20% restocking fee. I`m not sure about shipping charges. If you attend some bike events and find a Mustang seat you like on a softtail talk to the owner, they will probably allow you to set on the bike.

That's at least $40 per test.

3-4 months after purchasing my 04 Fatboy replaced the stock seat with a cinderblock brick probably 5 times more comfortable than the stock seat
Then purchased a Mustang  :bike: 500-600 mile days no pain no problem

I believe it has to do where you plant your feet also.
6'2'', 215lbs, 2005 Fatboy & built custom forward controls that clear front fender 3/4" (could use them another 1.5" forward), stock seat & stock bars & 800 mi. days easy! :chop:

One problem with Mustang....On many new models they eliminated the standard solo seat and only make WIDE solo seats....Ok if yo have a big ass, but too wide for the rest of us. I had a standard size solo on my old softail. My son ordered a solo for his Dyna not realizing it was wide..It made the bike look like a John Deer.

I have a 2004 softail standard

I hated the stock seat. It was too soft and but ache would occur in a short time.

I purchased the HD fatboy sundowner seat.

Firm and very comfortable
Have had now for years and it is still great.

That's my advice and I am sitting on it!

Well, I ended up going with a Mustang Vintage Solo. Model 75750...I figured if I didn't like it then I could always sell it without much loss.

After a week of riding 20 miles to work and back, I like it. It is softer than the previous seat. Definitely let's me settle into it and stay put better. When I hit a hard bump, I can feel the seat soak up some of the hit as well as some vibrations. It's only been a week, but I'm very happy. Can't wait to see how it does on a longer ride.

I thought my old seat was stock. But when I pulled it I saw a Corbin-Gentry tag calling it a "butt bucket". If anyone wants it, just let me know. It looks good, but is too hard for my @$$ and back.
