I just putting primary back to gether .I ajust clutch like I always do but she wont stop walking on me ..I pull clutch in at lever and put in gear and she wants to walk,go...this is first time changing primary chain,had spring plate out to pull hub put back same.but now cant get a good ajust.1/2 out,3/4 out she still wants to walk,like in gear alittle please get back,,,do I need new clutch shes 30 years old,or say young
Try adjusting it only 1/4 turn out from lightly seated. I know the manual says 1/2-3/4 but just give it a shot. Make sure the cable is all the way slack as well and when re adjusting it try pulling the lever and letting it snap back a few times while adjusting it out.

If you've been riding and the clutch is warm it might make a difference in the adjustment.

Also try running the adjustment rod in a full turn from lightly seated then back out again then try to adjust. It helps seat the throw out bearings and plates.

no shes cold,i just changed clutch cable,and when I did I coulnd get it,but then I must hit rite spot or something and it went working.now I did stuff that I needed to ajust again and no go.like I say theses plates are 30 years old..get back
When you put the spring retainer back on which position did you use? Did you check it before you removed it? It's got 3 possible positions. It's been a long time, but as I recall you should start with the middle choice. Service manual mentions it. My guess is you've got it in the tightest position. Look for the A, B and C markings.

a flat edge across the spring when you've got the bolts seated. Also in the service manual. When you take the retainer off you can see which seat is middle. Start there.
My guess is if you put a flat edge on the spring as it is now you'd find it's depressed inward, which limits how far the pressure plate can move.
I see in the book 3 diff setting low med and high compression...only thing how can I tel where to put can I tell by looking at back that goes to spring
What letter are you on now? It's been about 20 yrs since I screwed with the settings trying to get more bite. I can't recall exactly which is loosest, but I'd guess A.
Look at the plate, you shoudl be able to see where a bolt made contact. Try that one. Flat edge on the spring, spring should be flat.
(BTW to your how to check plates thread... the adjuster is there to make up for the stack height changes as the disks wear.)
Plus once you do this, you need to loosen up the cable completely, and disconnect the cable from the release lever, set the adjuster and readjust it all again.

I had to do some googling cuz I couldnt' remember the letters off top of my head. A is Mid, B is Most, C is Least. Start with A like i suggested before. Check the spring for flatness. Flat should be good.
My guess is that you're currently using B position which is giving you the problems.
Get the spring pressure stuff adjusted properly with the Cable and release lever adjustment LOOSE. Once spring is set correct, adjust release lever throw per Service Manual, then adjust cable.

YES you can see the letters. They are stamped in the aluminum retainer. Move yours to the A hole. lol then check it you want the spring to be flat.
Look at the 6-15 picture from service manual. Look at the "Concave" picture, this should help you see why you aren't able to get enough throw of the clutch adjustment to release the levers. The pressure plate bottoms out on the spring if you've got a tall clutch plate stack (ie new or minimal wear).

I've said this about 10 times now. YOU need to check the spring to know what position to place the retainer. You want the spring to be FLAT. So whatever hole is needed is the correct one.
Do you not have a factory service manual?? It explains what you need to know and do. It's an adjustment that you need to determine.

well theres no marking on plate,so I moved 1 hole to left,dont no what letter I am on but it went to working.can I hurt anything if on wrong letter.you were talking about looking in book for measurement,i am 65 and don't understand a lot why comes to measure,get back please
my manual don't say a dam thing bout where it should be it just shows 3 different setting.and there is no marking on it,sorry.done
Look at the post I provided to you with a picture of the ring. You get a cross section of the ring, That lets you see the height differences.
There's an A, B and C next to Three of the 12 holes, you have 4 bolts, put one bolt in the A hole, then start that bolt The remaining 3 will go in correct holes. Can't mix em up from there.
If it's working now, you should be good to go. No it's not going to hurt anything if it's working. Worst case you will have slippage, in which case you would try a different hole. You *can* break the release fingers if you kept the adjuster where it was... because like i said already, the pressure plate will bottom out.
Did you use a Flat Edge to check the spring to make sure it was flat when you mounted the ring?

Don't be getting PO'd at me man. I have explained to you many times how to set it correctly. Tried very hard to explain it to you. It's easy, you're over thinking it.
Buy a real Harley Service manual. It's in there.

Also check that aluminum plate to make sure it's not warped. My wife's did that on me and gave me fits adjusting the clutch until I noticed it.

Rageglide, thanks for the diagrams, I had not worked on that style of clutch before, seeing the pics helped. I was confused trying to figure out what was going on until I saw it was an older style set up.

I talked to a guy haven't seen in years.i had every thing rite but then run out of cable doing ajust.well he said unhook cable from lever that's over tranny.screw in ajust screw till it pins lever back,the lever over tranny,then ajust out the 3/4 ,lock down hook cable back up and preato perfect grabbing half way out the way I like.well so much for old clutches and after market cables>>>>thanks to yall
ape hangers and + 6 cables,aftermarket cables suck.now have 3 new clutch cables,all measure same.but got the adjustment I needed using old one.thanks for ol school remidies???
