First of all, Hello. I just moved over from the other site. I posted on the other site about a ticking in my primary on start up until it gets warm. I have taken the primary cover off, and looked at the tension of the chain and checked the comp nut but so far I have found nothing. I have a 07 FLHT with a HQ103ST kit. This ticking started about 300 miles ago. I have 12,000 on the bike.  Any suggestions? I am thinking I need to change to the SE comp sprocket and nut anyway. That will maybe fix the ticking.

Trip

If the compensator is worn at 12k miles..you,ve got other issues...check the chain for side movement...then double check lateral alignment (from clutch to comp....) ...theres about 4 different spacers available for alignment ...or you can make your own.I,ve actually seen ring gears with loose rivets also.

When you checked the comp nut, did you pull the whole assy out and look at everything? Educated guess would be the compensator "spring". The comp "spring" is just a cup-shaped piece with two thick wave washers (the springs) in it. The cup-shaped piece, referred to as a cover assy by HD, is slightly indented to capture the wave washers. Sometimes the "springs" are a pretty loose fit inside the cover and can dance around quite a bit. Just a thought...

No I didn't but that is the next thing I will try, thanks.

2007 models use a bolt on the comp, it sounds like it could be a faulty adjuster.

Well, I took it to an Indy friend  today and we took off the cover and removed and inspected everything. We found nothing. Put it all back together started it up. No, it didn't fix it, but we listened carefully and it kind of sounds like it is coming from the rear cylinder. This noise sounds like the noise the shifter makes when it rattles but I have grabbed it so it wouldn't rattle and it is still there.
