Can anyone measure a new plate's thickness for me, I'm chasing a small problem with the hyd clutch, it seems that there isn't any free play left at the lever and it seems that the engagement point is farther out than it used to be. There are no adjustment because it's hyd. I have pulled it apart and everything looks fine, the sm calls for service limit on plates of .143 and all the plates measure at .149-150 except for the first plate ( narrow one ) which measures at .153  I'd hate to buy new plates if they are the same thickness as the ones I have.

the thickness of a new HD stock fiber plate is .150 ,wear limit is .143

Its not the plates.. More then likely it's the master.. You could try backing of the center screw another 1/2 turn but I doubt it helps..

Max I don't believe there is any screw to adjust, it's a HD hyd clutch and as far as I know there is no adjustment, I've had it on for 7yrs and never a problem, just seems the past year i've noticed the changes and trying to figure out whats happening.

How many times have you changed the fluid in those years ?

ron1026

To tell the truth I've hadn't , didn't know it needed to be done and if the problems were different I would have thought so, but the pull and smoothness are the same.
I quess that will be the next thing to do after I put the clutch back together, Sure hate to pull the pipes off.

  Thanks Ron

I'd replace the fluid, remember as a clutch it'll be DOT 4.  It's been 7 years, do you remember the P/N of the HD Hydraulic ?

ron1026

Offhand I don't remember the the # but it was the complete unit,  the cover on the master calls for DOT5.

Quotethe cover on the master calls for DOT5.

OK, that should narrow it down, I'll look to see what info I have.

OK, there are kits that had DOT 4 and kits that had DOT 5, so I'll go with what your MC Cover says as I'd expect that's what you put in it when you installed the MC.

Thanks FSG , going to put it back together and change the fluid and bleed, never had a problem  with it releasing or shifting, just that slight change in freeplay and engagement zone being further out that got me to thinking the plates might be wearing ,but from what i'm hearing plate wear isn't the issue.  Now have to make some time to finish it, will let you know how it turns out.

   Thanks  again  Ron

Shows what I know.. They removed the center adjuster in the clutch pressure plate?? It's not really needed for a hydraulic clutch but I figure it was still there.. If it worked well then it does seem like the a fluid bleed / feed hole is  blocked in the master not letting it bleed off the pressure..
