3" closes to 2 3/4". No idea what car it was purchased for, I got it 42 years ago from my wife's ex-husband's garage stock. Could be for a Citation (garbage car) or an air-cooled VW, don't know.

My 2 favorites:

This is my go to wrench. No way this will slip, and it always takes the filter off.

I use a seat belt style strap wrench with a 1/2 drive extension and ratchet when they are really tough. Never fails to remove a stuck filter.  I see filters and drain plugs come in that are finger tight, some that are normal and some that Mr T must have tightened.

I saw a friend's filter come off while riding, ever since then I've always over-tightened mine slightly when installing. Hand tight, then use the wrench to go another full 1/4 turn. Getting them off takes a bit of effort, but nothing locked on.

Looks exactly like one I have. Been in my tool box at least 40 years.
I also use the HifloFiltro filters on the bike. A little muss and no fuss.
For my other vehicles, I let someone else do it. I'm getting too old to crawl under cars

From the FWIW department. I've been using the Mobil 1 Extended performance filter # M1-102A on my TC since the first oil change. IIRC they cost around $14-$15.

Curious as to what makes it Extended Performance. Does that mean it can go longer than normal filters? How is that accomplished?
Do you extend your oil changes?

I think "extended performance" is just a marketing tool. Still change my oil every 5k miles but I did go 7k once while on an extended trip. No measurable difference that I could tell. Engine didn't use any more oil than usual and wasn't any darker than at 5k.

I figured a marketing ploy as well.

People get all wound up about oil and oil filters, but I haven`t heard or seen an engine that had premature wear or failure if it had an oil filter specd. for the engine, and the proper grade oil.

I guess the hope is that if and when something like scuffing in cylinders or detonation happens that the best filtration MIGHT save parts instead of allowing those particles to keep flowing through the system. The tight rope is flow vs protection. There is only so much flow one needs but I want the most protection while meeting the flow requirements. The ease of use and monetary savings with a reusable filter is nice but throw into the equation a Crank, pistons rods pump and that once perceived savings goes out the door pretty quick. Add in pushing these motors to the limit and past their design and my mind starts looking at ways to prevent premature engine failure situations. Bump up the compression=better ways to cool. The more I wrench and push the boundaries those truths you hear alot in here become gospel. There is no free power and everything is truly a trade off.
I've never met anyone to dumb to get it but many to smart.
