Last year there was a guy and gal sitting with their bike by the turn from Beartooth the Chief Joseph, with a broken belt. Talked to him for a minute and he said help was on the way. My bet he still sat there for 2-3 hours!
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

I was there two years ago with fried stator number three. It was a long night for me.
Life can only be lived in the present moment.

I came real close to that on Beartooth a few weeks ago. Got down off the mountain and shifter lever stripped out. Ended up fixing it on the raod. What's worse is after 2800 miles in the mountains and hills of the high plains, I got home and my stator fried. Very, very lucky this time. It was about 30 degrees that day up on Beartooth, and that was July 9th.

2 yrs ago while coming down the Going to The Sun road my buddy broke a belt. Closest dealer is in Lethbridge Alberta which would be a couple hrs taking into account a border crossing or 2. The Harley emergency belt kit got us down off the side of the mountain and to a friends place where there was a truck available. Could have been a long day/evening without it

Opinions of the emergency belt? I've had one for years but never needed it.

It saved our butts that day and we rode a couple of hours at highway speeds with no problems We even debated going the 4 extra hrs home instead of putting it in the truck but decided not to push our luck. I myself bought one when we got home, looking at it as a cheap insurance policy

Hmmmmmm - I've read about em and never considered one. How much $$$$ are they and how labor intensive to install on the side of the road?

Went over the pass on Aug 12th and the 13th didn't see any bikers brokedown along the way.

stro1965

Hey Superheat, I was up there on the 13th too.

Superheat9

Stro1965  Oh was that you, I saw waving at me? :hyst:
The weather wasn't bad on the 13th a little on the cool side as we rode back over from Red Lodge to the park. Saw 2 huge moose in the Elk river. Had a coyote trot out on the rode in front of us, but a safe enough distance.  Along with the normal Buffalo and Elk.

Just talked to my bud, he said his wife had aflat inside yellowstone park. She picked up a horse shoe nail, which put a rip in the tire,FUBAR. So they ask a ranger for assistance, was told the park service could only help tow to the park boundery. Charged them $500.00 to cooke city. Then the tow company that took them from cooke city to red lodge charged another $400.00 plus. WOW, what a f^*#ing rip-off, I'm quite sure had that been me, my wife would surley would had posted bail for me in the end, LOL. Gene

Emergecy towing anywhere is not cheep!
I had a car towed 80 miles one day, (long story, but wiped out oil pan and tranny from debris on the highway!), and was charged $400. $400 to get a bike from Cooke to Red lodge seems cheep! Good reason to up your towing insurance if you travel out west. I carry the insurance through HOG, and pay the extra $25 for the unlimited towing. I figure on use out west will pay for all the extra I have paid and will ever pay in premiums!
The second towing company come into the park??

(Correction, $19.95 up charge for HOG members)

the way i understand the HOG road side assistance is  your bike has to be under warranty to use the Ultra package - that is y i only buy the Delux package. the motorcycle i tour with is out of warranty.

The Ultra pagckage is the same for towing, but it includes vehicle rental if, The bike is broke down and parts are not readily available, (and bike is under warranty or a service plan), or the bike is in an accident and is not imediately repairable. Seems to me the Deluxe package is good enough as it covers the towing end of the deal, unlimited, to the nearest dealer.

Looks like to me that a bike ouy of warranty or no service plan and the only extra bennifit is if you crash, they will pay rental for a vehicle.

Deluxe Package (optional â€" only $19.95* per year)

Greatly reduce your worries with the optional Deluxe Package, which adds the following benefits for up to two Harley-Davidson motorcycles:

•
Unlimited towing to the nearest Harley-Davidson dealership. (Please note that Harley-Davidson dealerships are not open 24/7.)
•
"Sign and Ride" benefit (all covered towing/roadside assistance costs are covered in full).

Ultra Package (optional â€" only $29.95* per year)

For even more peace of mind, the Ultra Package option provides the same benefits as the Deluxe Package, plus emergency travel expense reimbursement up to the $1,000 maximum. You may qualify for the travel expense reimbursement if any of the following occurs: your covered motorcycle is disabled as a result of a mechanical breakdown of a warrantycovered component (still under the original Limited Warranty or Extended Service Plan) and is 100 miles or more away from your residence; or your covered motorcycle is disabled as a result of a collision, is 100 miles or more away from your residence and repair is delayed overnight due to the unavailability of required parts. Ask for full details when you sign up with Road America. Certain restrictions and/or exclusions apply.**

PosseRider

As long as ya have a HOG membership, you can add this coverage for $20. I think last I renewed.  https://www.road-america.com/enrollment/templates/ra/ra_index.aspx     Pays full tow.

I broke a belt about three miles from the house. Called HOG and they had a hard time finding someone to tow the bike to my house.
They finally found a dealer that would do it, but I would have to pay a bunch of dollars because of the distance involved between where I was broke down and the dealership. I declined.
Then I called Progressive and had a tow in short order, but they only cover a short distance tow.
After that I added AAA RV Plus to my current membership, they cover 100 miles and they have providers everywhere.

We were coming back from Yellowstone in 2004 when my buddy snapped a belt near the top of Beartooth on the second-to-last switchback coming up the western slope.  He had HOG emergency road service, but HOG would not dispatch a tow unless we could give them a mile marker.  No such thing on Beartooth, just snowplow poles.  We explained to HOG exactly were we were on Highway 212 in relationship to Top of the World, the Beartooth summit and the Wyoming/Montana state line, but they would not send anyone out.  Thank you very much

Leo Wilson   at Bone Daddy's Custom Cycles in Red Lodge came to my buddy's rescue.  He got the bike off the mountain before dark (and cold), got us a room in Red Lodge, towed the bike to Billings the next day and hooked us up with an indy in Billings to replace the belt.

I forgot to mention,I told him about this site.
Has anyone ever had HOG pay off because they left me hanging 80 miles from missoula montanna.

I e-mailed Road America, the provider for HOG towing about not being able to provide sevice and having to find you own towing and got this back.

H.O.G. towing didn't work for me. AAA Plus RV works real well.

I'm not a proctologist, but I know an asshole when I see one...

I've got RV Roadhelp through allstate.  Rates just went up to like $120 a year though... They'll tow 'anything' you're driving if it's road legal that is...  used it on bikes twice and car once.  They take you to the nearest repair facility that can fix whatever it is you're driving...
It slid 112 feet and I had no road rash
