Just spoke to Crane tech. Hoping to purchase a new set of their jam nuts.  They're in between locations, (moving), and the nuts aren't readily available.  Does anyone know of a source that might have these 28 tpi jam nuts?

The posts on here recently about this subject did an excellent job or inflicting paranoia and fear of cracked and broken nuts... :hyst:

Would rather start with a fresh set in this new motor.  Leads appreciated.

Thanks

I did some research, Fastenal, McMaster Carr and some others and finally called Crane, again.  Taken right from their online blueprint, their Time Saver nuts, are 9m x 1.0 or metric. I searched the forum and found that Sir Garfield had addressed this with a guy who had the same issue with S&S rod nuts. These nuts are scarce as 3 headed snakes.....So fortunately I was able to buy 4 from Crane.

As for adjusting them as SG explained in the post I found, "1.0" = 1 mm thread pitch which = .039 per turn.

Grandma always said ya learn something new everyday....., that is if yer paying attention.

Thought I'd share this valuable tid bit or at least revive it since there's been so much discussion about these rods and nuts here lately....

Hmmmmm what are you doing to your motor?  Are you or have you milled your heads have you changed your head gasket?

This is just one more reason to say  to OEM pushrods or if one has removed enough from their stack height like let's say for example changed from an OEM HG which is approx 0.054" to a 0.030" and say a milling of the heads of say 0.010" then of course the SE Perfect Fit -0.030" HD# 18402-03 would work well.  But if nothing was removed then using the OEM pushrods is a viable option.....

I know, I know.....why would you go with "one piece" pushrods vs "adjustable" pushrods....there are tons of reasons to use the "adjustables" but you just named one that is a reason not to....as for me I don't mind removing my tank, and a rocker cover gasket, and breather parts and an o-ring....takes about as much time....just sayin....

I have seen more guys "fret" about their "adjustable" pushrods or having to "readjust" / tighten them or whatever.......

Just something to consider.....or NOT..... :hyst:

Classic,

Points well taken. You make a strong case for staying with stock oem style pushrods if they fit the application and you don't mind the extra dis-assembly of parts and time involved.

In my case, my motor is highly modified which rules out the opportunity for an "exact fit" style pushrod. The TP rocker boxes, IMO, take a little more time to R&R than the stock HD style.

On the side of good though, understanding that the Crane and S&S rods use these unique 9mm x 1.0 nuts is a good and valuable lesson.  Especially knowing that I've only got .100 total lifter plunger travel to play with using the S&S travel limited lifters instead of the stock B-style .200.

I'm sure this has been a bit enlightening for those of us using the Crane Time Savers and S&S rods who were incorrectly basing their lifter preload on miss-perceived threads per inch counts?  (The 9.0 x 1.0 yields .039 per 1 rotation).  That means you need 1 rotation and .011 more to get to .050 or 1/2 of .100.

I'm glad I learned all of this before I locked up my jam nuts for the last time using the HL2T lifters.
