new shovel owner

when i start my 80 fx it spits out oil like its sumped down from the tank is there a check ball or something thats letting this leak down ?

Yeah. It's inside the oil pump under the slotted cap. Drain your oil, remove the cap and the spring under it. If you have a magnet, use that to pull the little check ball out. wipe it clean. Use a little carb cleaner to spray down into the hole and clean it out a bit. Once you got it clean, drop the ball back in there. If you have a small brass drift, give it a tap to be sure it's seated. Put the spring back in, close the cap back up, fill her back up with some fresh oil. If you haven't done it in a while (or like most peoples cases EVER) pull your hoses off the oil tank and rinse it out before refilling it. You'd be amazed what can collect in there over a year or 20!

easy has you covered on the check ball seating.  Some guys drop in a new ball after seating the old one, some seat a new ball, remove it then drop in another new ball.  Not sure if that is actually necessary if the old one isn't nicked or scored but it can't hurt.

When I got my shovel I had to use a wide blade screw driver and Brake Kleen to remove the putty like gunk in the bottom of the oil tank. The parts washer at work couldn't touch it.

  It may be overkill but over the last 17 years I've replaced the oil lines twice. I use 3/8 transmission hose from Napa. It's a bit stiffer, doesn't kink as easy and I would think it can take a bit more abrasion than some stuff out there. I like black hoses, if ran tight they blend into the background.

Another little tip, I used a old ball and welding rod (arc) , zap it to the ball and use fine lapping compound, give it a few turns , clean seat and check the gray area made by the compound, repeat as necessary.

This means the pump will be off the motor, to clean out the compound.

Works perfect and will also show up any cracks in the seat, which means the pump is toast..

If this is happening on a constant basis like when ever the bike is started, it could be the pump isn't savaging properly due to a stripped drive key.  If this is occurring only after the bike sits for a length of time it's most likely the pump check.
A pushrod end also works well for lapping the check seat if you don't want to mess with trying to stick a ball to a welding rod.
