What do you use?
Same oil as the engine or gear oil?

It's a really good question. When those transmissions were designed (1930s) they recommended 50w motor oil. In fact they kept that recommendation at least through the panhead years. Truth of the matter is you can use either motor oil or gear oil. I kind of prefer gear oil. Some guys say gear oil is too thick to lube the main drive gear bushing correctly. But I haven't seen a problem.

:agree: with the gear oil (hypoid) ran it in all my 4 speed boxes, for that matter I run 75-140 in my 5 speed TC also.

40 years cant be all wrong as I've never had an oil related issue with any of the tranny's.

Redline Shockproof Heavy. It's fully synthetic. Got it at an independently run auto speed shop about twenty minutes ride from me.

I use Belray Gearsaver in the trannie and 70wt in the motor. I should be getting my first case of Penrite 50/70 engine oil soon. I'm very curious how well it will do.

(edit to add: This is for the old 4 speed)I used 50 wt and switched to gear oil off the shelf at Napa. A bad bushing took out the seal 450 miles from home and I filled the dang thing with STP to get back.

I have been using Redline Shockproof Heavy in the shovel 5 inna 4 speed case since 03. Same in my 09 Twinky 6 speed since 09.

Redline MTL in the primaries.

Same here. Really quieted the tranny down, especially third gear.

Looking like Redline is going to be it.

That Redline Shockproof Heavy seems like some really good stuff.  I took the top off my FXR gear box after the thing sat without being ran for weeks and the gear box had pink gear lube covering everything.  It was impressive; no dry starts with this product, that's for sure.

Edit to Add:  www.laneautomotive.com carries it and ships.

You know what Jam? Damn good thing you weren't too specific about the application in this question. And if you were then I'll only plead that I was drinkin and missed the "finer points" of the post. Anyway here goes: One of my teachers taught the simplicity behind the very resilient Harley motor, (And, many shoddy mechanics get good results when tinkering, A testament to the simplicity to the design) Anyway.. Hot? Add thickener. Cold? Run thinner. In San Antonio, in the '59,,hot days (or generally the summer season): 2qts 50 an 1qt 90 in the horseshoe for the motor. 60 in the tranny. Cold season, Be a (Miserable) man , Kick yer ass off and get that 50 weight movin in both the tranny and motor. Northern zone, around the rivers in central NY, Not far from Oneida or Ontario, Year round you'll be fine drinkin Old Vienna, Utica Club, or Schlitz, drownin a worm in the river and knowing that you have 50wt in both holes of your 84 or earlier,,,,,,,,,Just sayin

Plus, those pink dots on the floor are a really nice change from the usual honey-brown ones.

Yup, with $4.95 shipping, that adds up to $19.90. The oil is actually $14.95 per quart.  For me shipping factors into the cost of what I'm buying.  :nix:
