I'm getting ready to replace the clutch plates on my late Softail. Is there anything other than what's in the manual I should know? I'm keeping the stock spring. It seems pretty straightforward, but I've said that before.

In your new bike...why would it need plates already?   Rick

No, just follow what is in the service manual.  Pretty straightforward.

Make sure you put the inner spring in the right way, soak the plates in oil and you should be good.

Make sure you remove all the frictions and steels.  Newer clutch has a small friction with the spring mentioned above that's hidden behind a steel.  Looks like it belongs there because it's so deep.  Needs to be removed and very easy to overlook.

There's a bit of chattering in the friction zone occasionally, and I wouldn't trust this dealer to replace a valve stem cover. I'd rather eat $150 than risk them screwing it up.

Anyway, thanks for the tips. I'll get on it in a few weeks. Not urgent.

The inner orintation in case you don't find it in the SM.

Are the damper spring and damper spring plate normally replaced at the same time as the friction plates and the steels? Do they come with the kits?

You might give it some miles to wear in and see if it persist or gets better.   Rick

What primary fluid are you running?

I've not replaced any damper springs or seats but have added extras when doing some testing a few years ago.

Depends on whose kit you buy as to if they are supplied, some kits with extra plates advise removing them and so don't supply new ones.

Depends on the kit, but extra plate kits typically ditch the spring.  Current SE kit is an example.

I ordered the Drag Specialties kevlar replacement for OEM (9 plates). I'll get to it on a rainy day (I wish). Thanks again.
