I used to be known as Podunker and for some reason I couldn't log on, so I changed my username.  That explains no introduction and first post.

I'm selling one of my Shovelheads on E-Bay.  '79 (early) FLH.  Frame VIN is 2A44968H9. Number on left lower case is 179 010 021

I know the title, frame and engine numbers should match, but I also know there was a short time during '79 production run when Harley experimented with non-matching engine number known as crankcase numbers, according to my research.  The problem is, my 44968 is outside the parameters of the known bikes missing the matching engine number.

In decoding number on lower left case, I come up with this: Should be 10-digit number but since engine designation number is one digit ( some have two), the entire number is only 9 digits.

1 = 1200CC Shovelhead

79 = Model Year

010 = Jan 10

021 = 21st engine produced that day

I've never had any reason to believe that, although engine and frame numbers didn't match, that this was not a "numbers matching" bike.  :scratch: But, I don't want to spook any potential buyers.

Can anybody shed any light on this?  Is there a number to the factory I can call to verify that everything is kosher with this bike?

Numbers were Not on the left case as VIN until later in 1983.
Your engine numbers should be just in front of the front tappet block.
Those "belly" numbers are for production and build date info.

Twisted, the frame VIN range may be 43000 through 48199 and is contained in an AMF service letter I have a copy of. Your frame VIN is within that range.

Having nine digits in your left crankcase number makes sense because a 1200 FLH is 2A so the code number is 1. If your Shovel was a 1340 then the code number would be 14, resulting in a ten-digit crankcase number.

In front of your front tappet guide you may find the same nine-digit number that is on your left case and you may find it again inside the gearcase compartment.

At the rear of each crankcase half near the outer edges you may find further ID formatted similar to the following example: A123.
On the front of your trans case there may be other stamped-on ID but not the same as you may find on the rear of the cases. The trans ID will be in small characters so look close.
Another set of ID characters may be stamped on the padlock plate of your lower triple tree. If present, this ID will be different again to the trans ID.

If all this ID is original to the bike then H-D may be able to confirm it. Try calling H-D Customer Service on 414-343-4056 and speak to a lady named Ola.
