The bike is a 2009 Fat Boy.  I've always pulled wheel bearings using the collet of my wheel bearing tool to grab the inner bearing race and pull it out.  I've never had one like this, so looks like I'm going to get some new education.  Before I get my hands dirty, can I get some advice on how to approach this mess and get that bearing out of the wheel?

UltraNutZ

blind hole bearing puller should do the trick with maybe a tad bit of heat

They need to be changed for the same reasons

Weld a bead around the inside of the outer race to shrink it, or weld in an old washer, nut, bolt. or whatever to give you something from the other side to tap on....

UltraNutZ

never done it on a harley but have used a dremel to cut the inner bearing on my john deer rear axle before.  might work as well

VDeuce

Borrow a blind puller from local AutoZone...

That works. TIG weld a bead around the inside of the race, let it cool down and it will literally fall out.

By far the easiest if you got a mig welder..

Welding a bead on the inner race works awesome .  In fact I did a front wheel off a sportster for a guy at work today both races fell right out when cold.  Bob

Use a three finger slide hammer puller. See pic.......just reverse the fingers so the tabs are out not in.

I use this type of puller all the time for bearing removal (boats mostly)

Thanks for all the replies.  I'll let you know what I end up doing and how it goes when I get the bike.

hhmmmmm....  Wonder if that inner race welded itself to the axle?    Hope not....  :bike:

Let's say it did weld itself to the axle.  (I don't know for sure yet until I see the bike.)  The race should keep turning with the axle I would think.  I don't know if the guy tried to remove the axle or not.

:agree: I've had to do this on a couple of these new HD  :turd: bearings.

I carefully put a bead around the inside/middle of the outer race.

Last one  I did like that, I welded an old valve to the race with the stem pointed in. Let it cool and a light rap on the old valve stem got it out.

So, it sounds pretty tough to keep that bead on line.  I'm taking the wheel to an experienced welder.  (Wish I was one.   :emsad:)

Well, the guy who worked on the Fat Boy before me didn't put back the smaller spacer to the outside of the rear brake caliper.  I'm thinking this is why the bearing blew out and the brake pads were completely worn down?
