Can anyone comment on the merits of using the carb spacer and/or the insulating spacer on a modified G carb for my build.  I'm going to use that carb with a Force Wind forward facing air cleaner, the one with the 90 deg elbo.  Other than for spacing needs is there value in making the intake tract longer and how long?  The spacer is 1 inch while the insulator varies probably form 3/8 to 1/2 inch from what I have seen.  Do you use one or the other, or both and why.

Thanks,

I use the insulator cause it helps with hot starting by keeping the carb/gas cooler after shutting it down on hot days. These carbs, although called "shorty" stick out pretty far already and may interfere with your right leg with the 1" spacer. Bolt it all together and see how comfortable you are reaching your pegs before buying the spacer block.

Ricochet,,I use the insulator for a stock set up for the short,,,but when running the crazy way out elbow intake its not needed,,the elbow would frost over as I rode,,Its also toucher starting as the gas had to travel an extra 12"...the thing I disliked was the loss in low end torque,,the longer the runners in the intake the bettter top end,,,went back to short intake,,,I still have the custom ported intake with the"knife" inside,,,very nice intake,,will make you a great deal if you want it..

Thanks guys.  The elbo is just part of the air cleaner assembly and outboard of the carb.  Using the spacer or the insulator would be between the intake and the carb.  I have the intake for the "G" supplied with the top end that has been mocked up.  It's been massaged but looks like it's just to smoothe out casting irregularities and size to ports.  It does match ports and carb perfectly.  Does a 1 inch spacer make a difference performance wise to the intake tract versus not?  The insulator I understand.  I've seen 3/8 inch ones and thought I'd seen thicker ones years ago.
