I'm trying to figure out the correct part number for Cometic MLS head gaskets. It's for a stock twin cam 96 cubic inch engine.
Stock HD part number is: 16775-99B.
The confusion stems from a possible misprint in a Cometic catalog. I'm seeing (2) different part numbers for the corresponding OEM # (16775-99B)

I'm seeing:
C9790 Head Gasket .030" Spring Steel All Models Std Bore 1999 -UP
C9745 Head Gasket .040" Spring Steel All Models Std Bore 1999 -UP

What is the stock head gasket thickness on a 96ci TC engine?
Look at the attached document and search on "16775-99", and you will see the two different Cometic part numbers for the reference OEM part number.

Yes, an Andrews 48H. I have some oil seepage around the heads, so I want to replace the head gaskets when I install the cam.
Do I go with the Cometic C9745, which is a .040" head gasket?

Stock gasket thickness is .045 so you'd  be good using Cometic's .04 MLS gasket and you'll increase the compression only lightly without negative consequences. Go to the BigBoyz calculator site and play a little with the variables.

I would consider going with the .030" head gasket. It raises the compression only about 5 PSI with the Andrews 48 in a 96"
I am an adult?? When did that happen, and how do I make it stop?!

:agree:  You'll get better quench turbulence and less detonation as a result.

Will this cause any hot starting problems? I do not have a compression release.

You will need to get it tuned either way. Tuned properly and you won't have issues. Crappy tune and you will have issues with any thickness head gasket.

Personally, if it was mine I would mill the heads .030" and use a .030" head gasket, but I like pushing the compression.

OK. This is just a temporary build till I source some used HD 103 heads with ACR and build a 107. So I'm not looking to put any money into machine work on the current 96 ci heads. I picked up the Andrews 48H cams awhile ago and I'm just looking to get the best bang for the dollar right now that's also reliable and has no starting issues. I also have a 2:1 pipe that I'll install with the Andrews 48H cam.
One last thought. I plan to use the stock non-adjustable pushrods. Will that be OK with the thinner head gasket?
Thank you for the help!
