Cam chains

I have a 2002 dyna with 51k miles and am getting ready to do cam chain shoes.
Local dealer says to also replace the cam chains.
Trying to keep on a budget as just got layed off.
How long do they normally go?

Inspect them- if the pad wear is down to metal, then the chain should be replaced. If there is still some pad remaining, see if they are smooth, without any tight/loose spots. If they look/feel ok, I'll reuse them.
Inspect everything while there- and replace the inner cam bearings.
Remember to mark them with a sharpie so they go back on the same direction they came off.

I ended up getting 130k out of a set.  They were stretched by then though, especially the inner one.

Used chains (if in good shape)  are actually better on the new tensioner pads. 
The original pads have basically smoothed and polished the outside edges of the chain. 
Typically,  the new tensioner pads will last twice as long as the original pads.

A new chain will have the sharp edges again.
